2 major things you need to know! betty and subaru do NOT have a romantic relationship !! an artificial spirit (artificial because echidna was involved in her birth, she isn't a natural spirit) like betty can't feel romantic attraction anyways so her and subaru are completely platonic! and second thing is that the reason subaru didn't have any major burns or inhale enough smoke to make him die is because his miasma (witch's scent) was kinda covering him like a thick blanket and it allowed him to move throughout the burning mansion a lot easier
