This episode is definitely full of subtle things and Japanese romance cultural tidbits that make it that much more meaningful.

just one thing: at 17:00, the book was a reference to "Kimi tachi wa dou ikiru ka?, how do you live?", the original name of "the boy and the heron", the latest ghibli movie (the movie is a book adaptation). It was on theaters at the time this episode was released.

Apart from the kanji meaning in the muffin, it also was shaped like a heart when Ichikawa flipped and looked at it while in his bed. She also drew a heart with the chocolate that was on his face when they were in front of the convenience store, so basically she already gave him 2 hearts.

So... Yamada probably got the Coffee on purpose to give to Ichikawa since she thought he likes black coffee from their date. And Yamada said "Sayonara" which bascially is a FINAL goodbye... and a cut bit from the manga is "Garfield" as you call him saying "But there's still 1 month 'til graduation".

True but the first one she gave him from last episode was the Katakana for "Gi" because it was part of the Japanese word for "Obligation" which is "Gimu". I think for the one that has "Su" on it, she didn't quite have the courage to make 2 for "Su" and "Ki" so she just made "Su". But when she rips it in half, the piece she gives Ichikawa ends up looking a little bit like a heart which I thought was very cute.

My dad’s friend used to ask him for relationship advice so that he could do the opposite of what my dad would do. That’s how I feel about Ichikawa and Adachi.

14:21 Something lost in translation at this point. Another interpretation for what they say here could be Ichikawa: "Su ...?" Yamada: "And ... ki." She did say it, sort of. As best she could.

THE LETTERS ON THE CUPCAKE HAS MEANING OKAY REMEMBER THE FIRST CHOCO YAMADA GAVE HER AT HER HOUSE? IT SAYS "KI" ON IT AND THEN THIS CHOCOLATE SAYS "SU". IF YOU COMBINE IT TOGETHER THE OTHER WAY ARAOUND IT MEANS "SUKI" MEANING I LIKE YOU IN JAPANESE [which Ichikawa understood too] its in all caps lock because i want them to read this very cute detail that only japanese speaking people would notice

Regarding Adachi and Nanjo/"Garfield", I feel that they do serve as counterparts of each other. They both come from single-parent households (Adachi with his mum, Nanjo with his dad), this info comes from a bonus booklet. Like you said, they’re both teens, and while Adachi seems to lack a male role model in his life (potentially why he asked Nanjo for advice), he still considered getting to know Sekine better before picking a White Day gift since he has a good heart. We don’t know too much about Nanjo, but there’s something sad about his expression when Ichikawa turned down his claim about men and women, he probably knows something we don’t. Not excusing Nanjo's actions, but it’s worth considering for his inner character.

this one is easy to miss: at the vending machine Yamada lost on purpose because she thought that Ichi doesn't like sweet things (he told her that during the christmas date) and her idea was that a black coffee would go well with a sweet muffin

So a lot of this episode was actually about Yamada trying to learn how to "get the point across" that's why she kept asking "have you been given a chocolate today?" From her perspective, she was essentially asking him, if "is this enough" or "do you understand that THAT is me giving you chocolates for real, not obligatory" - which is why she keeps giving him different kinds of chocolate until he says "yeah I was given chocolates" which communicates to her "yes I understand you have given me chocolates as a woman to a man, not as friends"

The chocolate muffin had the kanji “su” the beginning of suki which is like. But after she split it in half it made it into a heart shape clearly telling Ichikawa that she likes him without having to say it. That’s why she also said it’s ok to get the wrong idea
