I think the Yen has fallen some so that's no longer strictly true. But it provides a quick ball park figure for anime viewing purposes. You don't need to know the exact dollar value of the Yen to say understand in Kaguya-Sama that she's trying to use the equivalent of a hundred dollar bill in a coffee vending machine.

the "claiming stuff as expenses" thing HEAVILY depends on the country. idk about the situation in japan but here you can literally get a tax write off on ANYTHING if you can argue for it. My mom did that with the flights and hotel of her most recent vacation because she needed "inspiration for a new book" and the tax office was like "yup seems about right" xD
