Nah, he wasn't trying to big himself up, he was trying to figure out why despite the obvious advantages he could sense he had that she was able to fight him evenly. Based on everything he could see and sense, it didn't make sense, so he knew something was off.

Fern popping off is one of the most hype moments in the show. She has ice in her veins, just a pure badass in battle.

I think we as the viewers naturally underestimate Fern's ability because we are comparing her to the only other mage in the series which is Frieren (i wouldnt count Flamme because we know nothing about her abilities so far). If they introduce more mages to the series i think thats when we will get a better grasp of how Fern stacks up to other mages esp human mages. because she looked like a monster against Lügner
