Flugel is a familiar name…. Some context from previous episodes 1. Season 1 episode 1; the show emphasizes that re:zero’s world has a different written language & Is NOT Japanese. 2. Season 1 episode 4; the show has Subaru learn how to read & write 3. Season 1 Episode 5-6; the show states the witch of envy was trapped by a warrior & sage & 1 more person, (can’t remember the exact word they used) 4. Season 1 episode 16; Otto points out Flugels tree, planted by a great sage 5. Season 1 episode 19. For a brief moment, something can be seen carved into the Flugel tree. It’s states “Flugel was here.” In Japanese….. A reminder; the show explicitly went out of its way to show the written language in re zero is NOT Japanese. But for some reason, someone carved into the flugel tree…. Flugel Was Here, in Japanese.

Seeing Petelgeuse as he is here and his relationship with Emilia.. makes everything he does in season 1 and his eventual death at Subaru's hand a tragedy in retrospect. So now we see when Petelgeuse got his sloth name and received his witch factor. Which Subaru has now. The witch factor I mean. Aside from the solid beautiful character writing, the worldbuilding and lore is the best part of Re:Zero. I love how massive and connected the world feels. Subaru may be the main character.. but things happened to these characters before he arrived that he may never find out about, which helps sell this world as truly alive.
