Black messiah is unreal. Might be blasphemous but I think he matured musically a ton between the two

D’Angelo’s debut was Brown Sugar in 95. He struggled with the fame his debut brought him—as well as suffering from writers block—and took a five year hiatus between releasing Voodoo in 2000 (though 5 years is -to me- a reasonable amount of time between albums, especially music of this caliber). The untitled music video brought on an overwhelming amount of (unwanted) sexual attention at the time that he was super uncomfortable with, and mixed with all the other things he was dealing with at the time, it became too much for him. That’s why his catalog is small, with his last album being Black Messiah in 2014. There’s obviously much more that I highly suggest you read up on and listen to about him and his life and art. One of the most influential artists of our time. I’m still trying to process his physical absence ❤️🩹 my forever favorite. Can’t wait for you to hear Brown Sugar and eventually Black Messiah
