I really enjoyed both the first and last scene of this episode so much. watching Richard and Emily find out about Yale and then seeing what came of Lorelai paying Emily back. I really didn't expect that reaction from Emily at the end, although I do understand where they both are coming from. that conversation really could have been handled in so many different ways 😭 I'm curious to see if the dinners are going to continue being a constant or if they will be less frequent. I feel like they shouldn't have to go every Friday, but I never got the vibe that her paying them back would mean they would just stop going and spending time with them. a very interesting episode for sure! 🩶

I really really agree with you here, but didn't do a great job at explaining it at all 🤣 she's upset because she no longer is able to force them to come to dinners on Friday or force them to do things and can't hang that over their heads anymore because she thought lorelai would never be able to pay her back. and I also agree that lorelai will still come as long as she isn't treated badly and I do think that Emily wants to still be able to treat her like a child where she has no say in the matter, which is unfortunate to say the least! 🩶

I don't think it's actually about just coming to dinners and spending time for Emily. It's about power and control, otherwise she would've listened when Lorelai said they were still coming Fridays. They were forced to come every Friday, forced to be polite, forced to make conversation, forced to eat dinner. Coming to dinner and not talking wasn't an option unless Emily allows it. Not eating dinner wasn't an option unless Emily allows it. Emily can treat them any way she wants and they had to come back next week. But now if Emily insults Lorelai, she can just leave or even decide to not come back next week because Emily can't force her anymore. I think that's what Emily is actually upset about, because the only thing that's gonna have to change is how they treat Lorelai. Lorelai will come if they don't treat her badly. Not even treat her well, just not badly.

I agree with you that Lorelai didn't pay them back because she wanted to end Friday night dinners! Emily was acting like a spoiled child when she didn't get her way! Emily pushed Lorelai away by acting like that! She's ridiculous!!!

I love the Friday Night Dinners, but the fact that they are framed as an obligation tied to a financial favor, sets a dysfunctional tone to begin with.
