Oda once more managed to remind us of the stark reality we live in by using Hody Jones as an emblem of modern racism. His hatred is not based on personal experiences of oppression but on inherited and indoctrinated prejudice. He harbors deep resentment against humans despite never being personally harmed by them, symbolizing how racism in people who have not personally suffered at the hands of the group they hate often stems from learned prejudice, fear, stereotypes and ignorance rather than direct experience. Also, the desire for superiority makes some people want to feel better or more powerful than others. Racism can be a way to elevate themselves by putting others down, even if they have no real reason for doing so.

There are thematic parallels in the Skypiea and Fishman Island arcs that explore coexistence and the lingering scars of historical injustices. Both arcs delve into the legacies of conflict, prejudice, and the pursuit of understanding between different peoples, offering a nuanced commentary on overcoming inherited pain to forge unity. Hody Jones, in particular, represents the hollow substance of hate. His hatred is ultimately empty—devoid of meaningful purpose or vision—and driven instead by a hunger for power. He does not seek to improve the lives of fishmen or secure their collective benefit. Rather, he desires control, manipulation, and the opportunity to use the idea of oppression as a stepping stone to conquer humans. In many ways, Hody mirrors the Celestial Dragons, embodying the very traits he claims to despise. He uses the label of "oppressor" as an excuse to justify his own tyranny, showing that hatred rooted in selfishness can perpetuate the same cycle of injustice it purports to fight against. This inherited pain cannot be ignored, but the cycle of hatred must be broken to move toward coexistence. True coexistence requires not only the courage to dream of equality but also a willingness to acknowledge and heal from historical wounds. But usually the "emptiness" of hate rejects the very idea of healing, just like Hody.

The “nothing” moment is probably one of the most important things in this arc theme-wise. A lot of people I’ve noticed don’t get it or think it’s a lame reason, but it’s the truth a lot of times. Hordy just hates cause that’s all he has known. In a way, Hordy was Queen Otohime’s biggest fear: blind hatred with no reason.

I love the 'nothing' moment it shows Hordy to be the embodiment of what the Queen and Fisher Tiger feared. Hate for the sake of hate regardless of whether they have any reason to hate another person. It so perfectly shows what can happen if you try to hold on to the grudges of the past. I must have vengeance for something I didn't suffer against people who have done nothing wrong to me.
