Dark Maiden Translations [Prelude, Night II] + Excerpt
🕑 Added 2025-06-01 00:22:48 +0000 UTCIn this post I'll be giving you a few translations for Night II of the Dark Maiden prelude, as well as the first passage for Night III of the Dark Maiden route. Heads up for light M/M intimacy. I won't be breaking down everything. Some for plot reasons, some for time reasons, and others because they're words/phrases you'll learn soon. You're welcome to speculate about translations, but I won't be translating other words/phrases for Night II right now.
Night II Translations
“Veth thy eudnas’dra?” -- "What did you say?" Lit. What you say + past tense modifier
-dra is the past tense modifier. Any time you see it on the end of a verb, it's referring to something in the past tense.
“Drei tafryk ywen zairyn?” -- "Which language is she speaking?" Lit. Which tongue she speaks?
Similar to languages like Chinese and Thai, Wyransith has no present progressive tense, it is understood. In plain speak, no -ing verbs. Rather than saying "I am walking" or "She is going" in Wyransith they simply say "I walk" and "She goes." Might be weird at first but ultimately makes the language much easier to decipher.
“Sal tafryk suvran lynek, nei?” -- "One of the little summer tongues, no?" Lit. Of tongue summer little, no?
This is one of the more complex ones that initially looks really weird. "Sal" is the word for "of" and will sometimes be attached to the object it's possessing, such as "duv'sal" of "of the gods." When it's free-floating, its structure is "Sal + possessed noun + possessor." Note, too, that "one" is dropped. Wyransith drops a lot of things that are understood. Adding "lynek" or "little" is derogatory, signaling that Serax doesn't think much of the summer tongues. It's a nod to the alternate lore we'll be unpacking as DMR unfolds.
Valdricht and Serax throw several different languages at the MC in this scene, trying to figure out if she speaks any of them. They're both well-versed in many different languages, particularly Serax who is something of a polyglot in all of the routes. As DMR progresses, you'll notice him making more of an effort to learn the MC's language, whereas Valdricht will prefer to teach the MC his.
“Veth aineth thy sairith?” - "What is your name?" Lit. What name your is?
The classic "What's your name?" Take note of aineth as you'll likely see it used several times in the upcoming nights.
"Yn a myndir’vir." - "Go to him." Lit. Him + to (directional) + go (imperative)
'vir is an imperative modifier. Unlike 'dra, it typically attaches to an infinitive.
“Eri veskara ywen gruneth thy vrosik selveyn.” - "I believe she finds your chest distasteful."
One of the more complex sentences of the night, in this sentence the main clause "I believe" or "Eri veskara" goes up front as it is indicating Valdricht's judgement. After that, the embedded clause follows the standard SOV structure "she chest<-your distasteful finds." You'll become more familiar with this structure the more you see it.
Final thoughts
That's all for this night, Merjas. Remember, if the Wyransith isn't fun or feels overwhelming, your MC isn't supposed to understand any of this either. She will begin to absorb it quickly after the prelude, but it will continue to be a struggle for her throughout most of Dark Maiden. And the struggle is hot.
Excerpt - Dark Maiden - Prelude - Night III - Passage One
You wake to heaviness and clenched fists. You anchor yourself by scent: burnt wood, tanned hide, something musky but pleasant, and blood.
Your eyes open wide, nostrils flaring. For a few seconds, you're disoriented. The space around you is dark, with only a few pieces of glowing wood where the fire should be. You blink, trying to bring the room into focus.
You hear a groan--low and deep--just before your gaze settles on a shadowy figure on the other side of the fire pit. As your eyes adjust, you realize it's Valdricht. He's reclining on a pile of furs, one arm propped behind his head, the other resting on the back of Serax's neck.
Heat blossoms across your cheeks as you realize Serax is on top of him, both men shirtless. You hold your breath, fearful that you're witnessing something obscene, but then you realize Serax is feeding. His head is buried in the juncture of Valdricht's neck, and you can hear the soft sounds of his throat working as he swallows.
Shame gives way to envy as your mouth begins to water and a dull ache begins to throb in your upper gums.
You manage to remain quiet, yet when Valdricht's head tilts to the side, his eyes instantly lock with yours.
Even in the darkness, you can make them out perfectly. They seem to glow, and the longer you stare, the more you realize it isn't just his eyes. His bare skin emits a faint light, as if he'd been blessed by the Moonlight Maiden.
At first, you aren't intimidated by his stare. It's all you can do to keep from licking your lips and signal that you're eager to partake. It's a struggle to remain still, to wonder if he'll summon you next, and if there will even be enough of him left once Serax has had his fill.
You manage to choke down a needy sound just as Serax finally withdraws. Eyes shut, he arches his head back and makes a sound somewhere between a sigh and a moan. The noise makes your skin tingle.
You're poised to sit up, prepared to find some way, any way, to get your own taste of Valdricht's blood. But Valdricht's attention shifts. He turns to look up just as Serax lowers his head to cover Valdricht's mouth with his own.
You go still, muscles taut as you wait for Valdricht to push him away. Instead, his hands move to the back of Serax's head, fingers threading into the other man's pale tresses as he draws him closer.
✧ Look away.
✧ Keep staring.

The structure definitely doesn't parallel well with real life languages, the only one I can think of is literary Turkish and even then it's uncommon and would sound very formal. I mostly use it because it's easier for me to not overcomplicate things. The apostrophe in 'vir along with all apostrophes you encounter in Wyransith are pronounced with a short, soft pause. It's almost imperceptible when speaking quickly, but more pronounced when speaking slowly (or angrily).

YAY WYRANSITHHHHHH!!!!!! I'm proud I was able to decipher some of these sentences before the translations! And I'm glad to have confirmation that "'vir" is indeed the imperative suffix. I'm curious- is the apostrophe pronounced as a glottal stop, or is it just cosmetic? Or something else? For that last sentence: It's interesting that the embedded clause comes after the main verb, even though it can be considered the object! The only SOV language I know well enough to discuss is Japanese and that would put the verb at the end always, and then usually drop the pronoun, so the order is "(embedded clause serving as object) (object marker) (verb)." But you can also insert a subject at the beginning: "(subject) (subject marker) (embedded clause object) (object marker) (verb)." And I *think* you can then front the embedded clause - kinda like how you had occasional OSV in Wyransith - but I've never seen it before. That would be "(embedded clause) (object marker), (subject) (subject marker) (verb)." (The comma seems important here to me but then again my Japanese knowledge is not that deep.) But it seems like Wyransith's word order might be more flexible than more strictly SOV languages like Japanese. It definitely gives me more to think about!

Valdricht has very high standards, whereas Serax has an all-that-matters-is-that-I'm-understood style. The older Valdricht has gotten, the less he's kept up with the various world languages. Particularly in the past few centuries when he's lived mostly in Nazralt.

Is Serax is bad at other languages he has picked up as he is at shadespeak or does Val just have Very High standards? Also, does Val just have a sort of grandma philosophy of 'no, I am not using this useless devil invention 😤' aka old people disliking learning newer stuff beyond the scope of what they have learned throughout their life when it comes to languages or does he dislike them because it doesn't come as easy to him as he likes? 🤔
