So there he sat, glaring daggers into the small fire crackling unbothered in the hearth while pointedly ignoring the piercing scowl of the beautiful blonde across the room.

Before she could continue, someone in the back raised their hand.
“Yes? You have a question, Miss Davis?” Madame Pomfrey asked.
The dark-haired girl in question stood with a nod. “If this potion is so new, then why are we responsible for brewing it today? I thought all or otherwise new experimental potions were to be first examined and approved by the ministry before a licensed potions master conducts a test brew?”
“You are correct. Under normal circumstances, a potions master would conduct this process themselves.” Madame Pomfrey nodded. “However, as a licensed potions master himself, Professor Snape has agreed to supervise today’s test brewings and assist where needed. I am here as a precaution in case any…unforeseen accidents occur-”
“Which, of course, is highly unlikely!” Umbridge interrupted with a laugh. “The ministry is confident this new recipe is perfectly safe. Your job will be to simply test this new recipe as well as some minor variations of its ingredients to determine aspects such as potency, longevity, and so on!” Umbrigde smiled. “Any other questions?” A few students began to raise their hands, but Umbridge instead waved them off and turned to Snape. “Excellent! Professor Snape, if you will?”
Snape, who’d stood silent until then, contained a barely suppressed grimace as he stepped forward and waved his hand. A single piece of parchment appeared before each of them, containing a detailed list of ingredients and brewing instructions. A glance over at Ron’s parchment revealed a slightly different list of measurements for each ingredient.
“You will follow the instructions before you to the letter.” Snape intoned with a sneer. “I have little hope that many of you dunderheads will succeed; however, this does not mean I will tolerate any reckless impertinence. Experimental potions are always dangerous, no matter the ingredients. I’d rather not have to write any more letters to your parents than necessary detailing your gruesome and foolish demise. Is that clear?”
Everyone nodded, quite used to this manner of speech from Snape. Yet before the greasy-haired professor could move on, a small ‘ahem!’ from Umbridge had him turning back to the mass of students with a grimace.
“Hrrnng–In the name of house unity-” Snape said with a face twisted in distaste. “-you will each pair up with the person whose name appears at the top of your instruction sheet.” As he said this, the ink on everyone’s parchment twisted and morphed, revealing the name of one of their fellow classmates. “Now, unless there is any more senseless drivell…begin!”
Everyone began to break up and move to join their assigned partner. There were a few shouts of protest at their pairings, but most simply decided to grin and bear it, at the very least until class ended.
Harry stood and studied the name on his parchment.
