Unlike the games, you don’t *have* to make a move here. That’s probably the big difference.

CentaureHeart

I see it more as making sure that Ash loses so that he keeps on training because he has MC energy

Jean Marc Kunnen

Squirtle wasn’t forgotten on oak’s ranch, he went to become a firefighter with the rest of the squirtle squad and forgotten there. I think in the final season there was an episode where all three of ash’s original starters met up, but yeah for the rest of the series he was pretty much forgotten.

carebear90

I'm expecting to see Primeape 'die' in this fight and evolve. I'm also confused that Squirtle hasn't evolved yet. I get Bulbasaur. It didn't want to get bigger and less mobile in the anime, but even there I hoped Greta's Ivysaur would convince it otherwise. And... I thought I remembered one scene in this story where Ash was considering Misty's Wartortle? At least I was pretty optimistic then that Squirtle wouldn't stay smol and eventually be forgotten on Oak's Ranch.

Jean Marc Kunnen

@HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan If it wasn’t obvious, i was talking about this being foreshadowing for an annihilape evolution.

carebear90

With all the talk about pokemon dying in this chapter and Ash never having lost a pokemon, now Tyranitar being selected... through Mew shenanigans even... It seems set up for exactly that. Primeape 'dying' in the fight and becoming a Ghost.

carebear90

So... I'm guessing just waiting out Destiny Bond isn't a thing here? In the games it only lasts until the User makes another move. What could beat it would be force-out moves like Roar or Whirlwind, and environmental damage like Sandstorm and Hail... or Future Sight. Not sure if Brock will ever find a solution involving Aura-use to do it, but at the moment, it seems like he has a severe case of tunnel vision. ^^

rezo42

Is it just me, or does it seem like Brock is going to crack Terastallization eight generations early? I can't help but love the image of Lance realizing Brock can make Titan a fairy-type defensively.

BronRevo

It's definitely foreshadowing. A Chekov's gun in a sense.

Jason Sampson

Yes, Primeape. Give in to your anger. Let your rage flow through you.

Jericho Rising

Ah but yoy must keep in mind, primeape has an evolution which is theoretically drawn about due to dying under intense pressure from using rage fist causing heart failure

Simca

With all my heart I hope primeape evolves to Annihilape. It seems appropriate to have Ash barely lose in the end but be rewarded with the evolution

Jericho Rising

While I agree, the fact something is lurking in the shadows of reality changes the game up entirely. While the story hasn't been Shonen per say as of yet, that doesn't mean ash still isn't a main character in universe.

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

I hope red herring. If not for Ash then for Brock (I don't think the guy could handle being the cause of a kid's pokemon dying... especially a kid on the first circuit)

CentaureHeart

Honestly it would be weird for Ash to win this one. Against Don, sure but not Tytan

Jorge Moreno García

Ash is about to learn a lesson or two, hopefully he grows from it.

ShyGuy42

I think a good piece of art would be Mew eating popcorn while watching this match. You know, doing the whole throwing popcorn to try to catch it with your mouth. And I also think this is going to be the introduction to Annihilape.

Jean Marc Kunnen

tbh diancie probably isn't going to appear there until brock gets a bunch of carbink. which will either happen at the earliest when kalos appears or, if the regions position are based on their real world counterparts, kitakami which should be between kanto and sinnoh

ShinLupin

well Mewtwo has paid some attention to Brock, a Zapdos got wrecked by him and there might even be a Diancie forming/being born near-by. IF it is Mew, then I can see why its here. Either for Brock or Ash OR because of them having a match.

ShinLupin

in this setting the condition might be something like generating a lot of Ghost-type Aura, but its possible, if Brock pushes Ash & Primeape hard enough

PiezoVolt

Good chapter. Gio was the first Elite challenger in this circuit, in your chapter called "Elite battles". This would make it his fourth time challenging the gym and second time challenging the Elite team. Love the little interactions with Zubat and gible, can't wait to see their personality in more drawn out battles

Petrox

Second meddlesome cat causing trouble. Must one up Mewtwo

Petrox

Damn, that BGM hits hard! The other Gym leaders should pay Brock so they can play it themselves for important matches. It would become Kanto's tradition

Glitched Knights

Mew! If this is your way of butting into Ash's Journey instead of when you helped turn him into stone...I'm okay with that. However! BROCK!!! Talking isn't a free action! Show the kid how much he still has to learn!!!

Jean Marc Kunnen

Ash thinking about one of his pokemon dying before a big fight where he’s going to use primeape? Either this is foreshadowing or a red herring.

nugitoBambino

Yeah, honestly I want a good match, but this is one where I think I'll be more narratively satisfied if Brock wins (usually I'm actually all for him losing if it assists the narrative) - year 1 trainer winning against Brock's champ feels hollow (but Ash having clever tactics and above average year 1 pokemon strength would be satisfying to see - to illustrate why he's in the role of 'chosen one')

angie bell

Is Ash getting an Annihilape? if anyone can help with that evolution it brock like 20 Rage Fists is not for the faint of heart to survive. also, is Mewtwo about to meet Mew?

gra gra

A lotta Somehtings

Mario Schade

Interesting decisions about the Pokemon. Butterfree was a striking character point after the farewell. Not sure if the little scene in the stands can replace that in this chapter (or if it should). However, there could be something “off-screen” about this later, since we're focusing on Brock. I think Muk is a shame. That was a completely different Pokemon in his set-up. However, it's interesting to deviate at this point, as Charizard and Don appeared shortly before and thus a late canon. I never really associated Ash with Beedrill, partly because it was often more of an opponent in the anime. But at least he didn't immediately catch a shiny Scyther or something... Beedrill is a normal decision and together with Primape, you can probably also cope with Muk. I just wonder how he's going to beat Bellsprout now? :D Other than that, this should advance a lot of supporting characters and set them up for the next “season”. Even though I like Brock even more, I don't think it's bad if we get all these smaller scenes from other characters. Thanks.

dragonslaver

Mew you little prankster.

Qweku_v

Thanks

David Green

Man, either Ash is fuuuuucked or he's gonna get some serious plot armour

BlackRazaras

Thanks for the chapter

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

*whispers* You might want to go over this one again. I noticed a fair number of small spelling errors.

Mad Max

Oh, No! Oh, Mew!
