Damn it. I was wondering why Gengetsu left that Okiya alone and now it all makes sense. And wow this ties things together perfectly. If he uses the eye later on as mizukage Konoha will literally hate him forever but Rei can have it and still see everything!

Raikor

I love it! I’d been thinking that there hadn’t been enough attrition where Matsu wasn’t there to turn the tides. (So out of character for me, I know :p) Sure that’s half the point, Matsu has been showing a better way by training his people so there is less attrition, but it’s still the ninja world. Matsu has run into a kill squad and an S rank ninja! There’s no way he’s the only one that gets unlucky. This though, was so perfect. Such a petty reason for someone to throw a wrench in Matsu’s plans. Such a small action that he didn’t even take. And then Gengetsu, holy shit I love how much of an enigma he is, especially him just playing in the blood after. Even if it was also an illusion it says something about him. I honestly have the impression that he might actually like Matsu at this point, it’s a razor thin line, but I think that’s where he’s at. I also think that he’s at least thinks he has earned some of Matsu’s loyalty with this act. And it’s remains unclear if he knows about Rei or not. I still think he does, but her getting her eyes and face burned like that give plausible deniability to anyone who might have seen her after the fact. I think her fighting, however poorly should give her away, but because she’s a poor fighter that might have been enough for observers to not even think she might have been a kunoichi once. And of course this overshadowed him starting shit in the last village, which mirrored the actions here. His few small words started some type of major incident in hot springs, and a kiss threw everything he had in jeopardy. It’s poetic Soo much going on in this chapter and I love it all.

This ch took me tf out

A massive loss on multiple fronts for such a small reason, especially since he already knew something like this would happen and alluded to trying to solve the problem and yet did nothing. I guess he'll just have to find a new set of byakugan with the information he got from killing that branch family one and how the eyes don't die straight away if blood is still flowing but the uzumaki fuuinjutsu starter notes is a massive loss unless he can get back to the land of veges

Trenton Robinson

I agree that it’s pride. The comparison that came to mind reading this chapter is that Gengetsu runs a Dog Fighting Operation and Breeding Kennel. He loves the cruelty and viciousness of the sport, but is smart enough to keep the dogs strong, numerous, and relatively happy by letting them form packs and roam the facility as long as they follow his training. He looks at others as nothing but lesser tools for his enjoyment, and loves pitting them against anyone, even each other to create better fighters. Matsu was literally a random chance by a no name worker who was able to get a world famous breed into his kennel, and that random pup skyrocketed up the ranks, organizing his own pack and increasing the value of all his hounds by forcing new systems that give the Kennel Master even more dogs to play with. So of course he will poke and prod at his new prize fighter, who has the potential for starting a whole new bloodline of prize fighters. He likes it, wants it to grow in ways he likes, and he enjoys the spectacle it brings. He has a new favorite dog. Then some lackluster, nameless shmucks get jealous and act directly upon one of his prize’s strongest links to his operation, potentially ruining all his work and more importantly, HIS FUN. So seeing his favorite dog seemingly pursue vengeance and the fight over caring for his own, makes him feel like he’s even further to being the perfect prize entertainment. He thinks he just successfully raised his perfect pet, and so he can’t help but feel some pride. Until we see his perspective, I can’t see his pride as grandfatherly. I see it as the pride of a dog trainer looking at a perfect specimen.

What movie were you referencing?

GodHand

Perhaps it's asking too much, but maybe you can post a monthly chapter and also a regular interlude chapter from some other character in the story? That way, it's essentially like 2 chapters a month, but not really. The interlude chapters don't even have to be especially long, maybe 2-3k words. Just enough to sate the desire the fans of this story have for more content...? I know I would love to read a Gengetsu-focused interlude, or one for Orochimaru, or Matsu's students, etcetera.

AlthePal

Holy damn excellent chapter! Reading this one just brought my appreciation for this fic to whole nother level xD

Potential Reasons for Why Kirigakure's Jinchuriki Have Not Been Mentioned: 1) Matsu hasn't really paid much attention to who the strongest people are in Kiri. 2) Information about Jinchuriki is heavily classified (only Jonin get to know). 3) One or both of Kiri's Jinchuriki died during the assault on Uzushiogakure and Kiri's been waiting to retrieve the Tailed Beasts when they revive 4) ??? Orochimaru I have been going crazy overanalyzing Orochimaru's motives in chapters 30-31. It would be really easy to go with "he wants to use Matsu as a test subject for experiments or torture him for knowledge on how to use the rasengan", but I don't feel like that's the correct way to look at him. This Orochimaru just separated from his teammates after the second war. He collects DNA samples from fallen opponents/targets, such as Blue B. However, the fact that he's doing missions without wearing a mask probably means that he hasn't joined Danzo's ANBU yet. He also hasn't become jaded from the third war yet. However, trying to figure out why he'd want to recruit Matsu aside from depriving Kiri of a future S rank ninja has been giving me a headache. Chapter 30: [Orochimaru didn’t nod back, his eyes, however drank in every detail of Matsu.] This makes me feel like Orochimaru either knew Matsu's father (Arashi) or was looking for tells to certify if Matsu actually was an Uzumaki. The problem with the first option is that the Land of Rain is nowhere near Uzushiogakure and the only place I could think of those two meeting is at a Chunin Exam. Chapter 31: [Right as Orochimaru raised his second saucer of sake to his lips, he paused, hovering in front of his lips. “I must admit it is rather disconcerting to see hair like yours wearing the Hitaeate of Kirigakure,” he murmured. ] Seeing an Uzumaki brainwashed to be loyal to the bloodiest and nastiest of the three villiages that destroyed Uzushiogakure would be disturbing to surviving Uzumaki. WHY WOULD IT BOTHER OROCHIMARU THOUGH?! Is Orochimaru just saying that because he thinks that he can bribe Mito into giving him advanced Fuinjutsu lessons by liberating one of her relatives from Kiri?! Gengetsu I'm not even going to attempt to figure out what Gengetsu knows/doesn't know. If Orochimaru is a headache, then Gengetsu is a full-blown migraine. Rei RIP Tenseigan. There is almost no chance of you ever appearing in this fic now. She is definitely the best recipient for getting the stolen eye without anyone noticing. The question remains though about what Matsu will replace the other eye with.

Green0Photon

Rereading the end bit, it's so well written. I love the conflict internally in Matsu not knowing what to believe or how to act. I love Gengetsu, the psychopath that he is. I'm confident that he fully believes he's moulded Matsu to be the perfect Kiri ninja. Not just killers, but killers who enjoy it. The two faced ness is perfect, and it might be that Matsu is exactly what he wants. Someone who appears kind, but also someone who kills and likes it. I think that's his ideal. But he likes blood too much to stop indulging Kiri in it. There's a reason he acted fatherly. And then really became cruelly happy -- Matsu didn't go run to his family when baited. He turned to *get* blood. He wanted to kill. And then did. In Gengetsu's eyes, Matsu behaved perfectly. Or, perhaps, maybe he would've like a bit more torture. The torture room may have even been some of Matsu's reward. Yet, Matsu was quick and powerful. The perfect instrument of death. No waste. Perfect vengeance. For most ninja, I do think Gengetsu does have the upper hand. Both physically and emotionally. But for Matsu, I think he's finally seeing Gengetsu as he is, but hasn't finished putting it together in his head. His Eyes of Kaguya are powerful enough to perceive Gengetsu. He nearly understands him. Honestly, I suspect Gengetsu isn't so much longer for the world. Or at least, for this role. I'd say good chance we pop off into a war soon, and Matsu might need to take the reins. Gengetsu might be really good. But he's not Fourth Shinobi war good. Either we see him retire, or we see him die. I feel like we're going to be up for a switch in status quo a few chapters from now. Once this one finishes being established and becomes normal. Death flags.

Green0Photon

Eh, it's clear he'd never do a runner. He was tied to the village and was clearly aiming to one day become Mizukage way down the line. Or at least, be one of the most influential people in the village, albeit also one of the most powerful (ninja wise). Rather, this is more about getting control by giving him freedom. No more stupid shit. You're a full jonin. You've graduated. Now you play in the big leagues. Even if for Matsu it might feel too early. Because he's generally overpowered at each level. But that means he's just a normal or close to normal or even weak jonin. Yet, he also went toe to toe with Orochimaru. At least briefly. Most Jonin simply cannot do that. The control is mutually giving the other what they want. Funnily enough, altruism. Matsu can do whatever he wants now -- short of being Mizukage. (And sure connections lacking, some skills lacking, some remaining obligations from Gengetsu still, and whatever ties he binds himself with. But that's pennies. It's clear that Matsu will prioritize the village. And he's loyal to it. He's a Jonin of the Hidden Mist. The control is that no control is needed anymore.)

Green0Photon

Fourthed

Green0Photon

I feel like the way Gengetsu and the Hidden Mist work is that it's both a trap and coming of age type thing. If you can beat the cruel trap, you're worthy. Yes, Matsu was once a little baby with dreams too high for his boots and not the skill and cruelty to enforce his desires upon the world. But Matsu has exceeded the ridiculously high bar each time. Growing his skills and allies each time, with prizes along the way, turning each trap to his immense benefit. All while growing the power of the Hidden Mist. Here we have an Uzumaki, truly turned to the Hidden Mist's ways (he might think anyway), even if they're still to an ideological and naive bent. But he can be cruel, he can kill, and he knows how to treat the lives of these Shinobi in a cold and calculating way. Yes, he might not do it quite the way Gengetsu does. But he does demonstrate the qualities for leadership (both generally, and also in the Hidden Mist way). And it's all the more delicious that he's an Uzumaki. If he wants to become Mizukage? Sure. Gengetsu needs to hang up the hat one day. Someone has to be the next one. Why fight it, when you can mould him as you desire? Just make sure he knows you're above him, that he knows to not take your place until the time is right. And not via betrayal. Because he simply can't beat you. --- So yeah, makes sense to me. That precious Genjutsu sensing scene from a while back is the rope you tie onto the baby elephant. The stick to the carrot. Make him unsure, even as he does grow powerful, and then make him your ally. I'm sure to people like Gengetsu, being the Kage would get old eventually, but being a spook never would. So perhaps he does have some desire to pass on the hat, but still be the spooky ghost hidden behind Matsu. Even funnier is the effect on Konoha, he might think, to have an Uzumaki as Kage, even with propaganda as good as Konoha's, yet remaining the same Mist deep within. Even if, of course, for Matsu, it's not propaganda. In fact, I'd bet that Gengetsu doesn't get Matsu at all. But he doesn't need to. An Uzumaki, not just loyal but attached enough to try and become Mizukage? I can't help but imagine Gengetsu occasionally laughing a deep cruel laugh when he contemplates what he's managed. Of course he'd say and actually believe that he favored the Matron. Not just an Uzumaki, they have a budding Hashirama Senju. The man who ended an era and started one anew. Loyal entirely to the Hidden Mist. No. Gengetsu is written perfectly.

Blahful

Hmm, the new control is the promotion. Matsu won't do a runner anymore

Jorge Moreno García

To me it appeared that Gengetsu is, in a very roundabout way, grooming Matsu into his replacement.

GodHand

Matsu could just as easily transplant a fresh eye from an enemy at some later point too. He's good enough at medical ninjutsu to do that, I should think.

Imef

He's already responsible to get the former Mudanin ready for the chunin exams. Training ninja who actually made the cut to genin seems like an easier task.

Imef

Red Riot pretty consistently releases once towards the end of a month.

Imef

I think the jury's still out on who the most likely love interest is. There's obviously Himeko who isn't being shy. There's also Rei who is an actually gentle girl and thus a stark contrast to most other Kiri women (though I think Matsu's second in command has more chemistry with Rei). There's another girl who hung around Matsu during the war. I'd have to reread that part, but I felt there may have been some interest there. I think Matsu taught her medicine whilst their superior medic ignored teaching her? I suppose there's also that one girl from the Okiya whom Matsu once asked if it's okay to "love her a little" after she showed him the cleansing cave. But there's probably too much stigma against her profession and too big an age gap to be an actual option. It somewhat irks me to read all the comments talk about combining bloodlines when speaking about Himeko. I'm just here thinking "Oi, I thought the consensus is that eugenics is problematic? What happened to hooking up because you get along?"

Imef

Hmm... Considering that nobody's expecting her to be alive and that she had her face maimed, it's not certain. Depending on how much resistance she managed against the Terumi, they might've squealed while being tortured. Then again, she was never the best combatant and outnumbered, so she may have felt inconsequential to the Terumi.

nugitoBambino

Bah! No faith in matsu's sense of aesthic! :)

nugitoBambino

For clarity @gremlin jack I don't disagree, that's a totally valid take - I just find it interesting that in the case of gengetsu I don't have a firm thought here. Like you could be right, or it could be planned and I'm genuinely not sure. Unusual for a character in fiction which makes it really fun for me haba

John Smith

I feel like Gengetsu promoting Matsu to jonin is another trap. He's now eligible for getting a genin team to the chunin exams? I imagine it might work differently than the the hidden leaf, but not that differently.

John Smith

Thirded

philip

A single question stands out, who is going to be the new okiya master/mistress. It clear that gengetsu already knows that rei is alive and has not called matsu out. I suspect man has an ulterior motive…

Gremlin Jack

That was the message that first attracted me to Naruto. But they started losing it by Shippuuden, which is why I never finished the manga.

Gremlin Jack

I think Gengetsu is genuinely pissed. The Okiya was his lever to control Matsu. By burning it down, the Terumi damaged his leverage. Gengetsu already knows Matsu can be ruthless if he has to be, Matsu's mission record speaks for itself, so a test like this would tell him nothing new.

Gremlin Jack

On the contrary, I think Gengetsu is genuinely pissed. The Okiya was his lever to control Matsu. By burning it down, the Terumi damaged his leverage. Gengetsu already knows Matsu can be ruthless if he has to be, so a test like this would tell him nothing new.

Gremlin Jack

Seconded!

Gremlin Jack

Honestly, I agree with the way Matsu dealt with those three. They were so petty and small-minded, like venomous insects. Do you waste time torturing an insect that stung you badly? No, you squash them and move on... and invest in insect repellant for the future.

Gremlin Jack

Brilliant chapter. Also love how you cover the Bakyugan angle. Who better to give it to than someone now known to be blind and who is expected to wear a blindfold? I can honestly say this is my favorite story of yours, and I eagerly look forward to every update.

IronHydra

Great chapter, sucks about granny tho, Gengetsu continues to confuse, it's almost impossible to believe he could actually have positive thoughts or interest in people other than how much he can fuck with them. Rei getting the Byakugan is honestly really boring, I've never been particularly interested in her character, and now she's just been given such a important thing. Really meh about that. Hopefully we can see more of Himeko and the Kaguya, really looked like she was developing a crush on Matsu, it'd honestly make sense if they ended up together down the line. Also pretty prime for bloodline mixture for possible kids. Can't wait to see more of this though, love the story.

nugitoBambino

i didn't think of that at all, but hot damn is that an incredible take now that I'm reading this. great thought, definitely believable. That's the beauty of Gengetsu as a kage I guess, you just have no fucking clue what the guy did or did not do, did or did not know about

Tom Tat

Finally new chapter! So glad I didn't stop my subscription. Love the chapter. I think it would be interesting twist if Mizukage decide to train Matsu. Just to mess more with him.

Green0Photon

For some reason, it just didn't occur to me that she could just stay blindfolded, but have the Byakugan. Would be super useful as a disguise. If anyone, she's the true ninja. Tbf though, in Matsu's quest to become the hybrid of Naruto and Kabuto with a touch of Gai, I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to actually push the curve and figure out how to reconstruct eyes entirely. Be cool to then hide the Byakugan by making it look like a normal eye. And let Rei go more back normal. A long time from now, though, probably.

MagicWafflez

.... ehhh, since rei is horrifically gifted at fuinjutsu and she cannot *use* that talent without seeing... in actuality it's a good place for the eye to go. that would allow her to see Chakra better for it and since it gives 360 vision she can hide that she has it much easier than anyone else. She was publically blinded verifiably. After that's been confirmed, he can install the eye and she can remain blindfolded to hide it. Him using it himself would be obvious and have serious consequences with both the mizukage and konoha, who would probably do their utmost to kill him.

MagicWafflez

well, it wouldn't have been hard to get him a jacket that fits, ninja come in all sizes and I'm sure there are petite jounin women... so gengetsu made sure to get him an oversized jacket to accentuate his youth and thus make him stand out more as a prodigy.

Very neato.

War sage

Great chapter Damn Granny you will be greatly missed. Orochimaru being creep towards a child.....yea that tracks. A ninja exam in a wooden building.....I can see why they stopped being a ninja village. Atleast Matsu got a few jutsu. To be honest I thought I was having stroke reading the segment with Gengetsu. That Matsu was promoted to jonin was a surprise, though I noticed a pattern with him killing people being almost like his permotion ceremony. Can't say I'm surprised Gengetsu was pissed about the Okiya getting burned down due to some pretty clan members ego, especially with how useful Matsu has been. Still think the three got off easy but oh well they died  in the end, but this was a lesson Matsu should take to heart as sometimes people will look for the smallest offense that they can use. Damn Rei, you did your best. She better get that eye the girl deserves it.

Reikon67

Can we please get more updates with this story, will I love your pokemon story. My need for plot and action is more here then there, are least drop 2 chapters a month instead of 1. Hell if I have to pay more just to get it I will.

Jericho Rising

Ah but the true madam can he behind the scenes. Rei can run the joint while the others act as screens

Jericho Rising

What i honestly like about this is that Rei isn't strong. She doesn't like to fight and won't be using the eye or eyes to become stronger. It's technically a waste but one made humanely, as a friend would want what's best for their friends.

Jericho Rising

I appreciate that outlook

Jericho Rising

Grandfatherly. Proud. For all gengetsu is a monster he's legitimately taken interest in Matsu but Matsu can't see past his threatening Genjutsu lifestyle

Earendel

Was dying of peak fiction withdrawal when you posted this right on time. Keep up the good work!

Green0Photon

Tbf, you could say the same thing about the Byakugan and Sharingan and Rinnegan

Blahful

I'm reading too much maybe but this is oddly symmetric. Promotion to Genin: You execute a peer. Promotion to Chunnin: You execute the instructor. Promotion to Jounin: You execute 3 Chunnin. So, promotion to Kage: Matsu kills Gengetsu? Matsu kills another Kage. Matsu kills several Jounin? This whole thing smells of Gengetsu setup

Blahful

What do you all think and Gengetsu doing a little genjutsu trick on these people to make them burn the Okiya? Just to harden up Matsu? Or am I reading too much?

Blahful

You're going to have to grow into it some,” he commented with an odd tone to his words that I couldn’t quite place. Ideas folks? What that mean?

Viva01

This is the monthly chapter. I try and post on the last saturday at 5am which usually results in most other readers throughout the world getting it late on friday or something like that.

Viva01

seems more like a frankenstein's monster, or a Mrs Potato head with plug and play pieces.

Viva01

Hmmmm not really a fan of Boruto plotlines. The Tenseigan just seems like a plot point to make Boruto special. Remember when it was all hard work and grit instead of who your daddy was? Pepperridge farm remembers!

nugitoBambino

I feel like Rei is strategically brilliant for the Byakugan. Byakugan has two uses for non-clan members: scouting and spying. Matsu has 'scouting' primarily covered, since he has Uzumaki chakra sensing and clan techniques, plus him having a stolen bloodline is something people will be checking for. The Kaguya girl, specifically, is a classic brawler, and wouldn't really be leveraging it to it's full potential (although someone that could sit in a bunker filled with chakra-infused bone and see outside it is a cool concept) -so I don't see her getting great utility out of it. Rei, however, is not someone anyone would expect to have a Byakugan (from an external perspective, the girls at a brothel don't even have the chakra necessary to activate it). In addition, Rei should be able to build up to spying on the entire village at the time, giving Matsu unparalleled access to information about the going on's of the village. Honestly, I can't think of a better resource placement for his plans to become the Kage of Kiri.

nugitoBambino

Ya know, in Palpatine's defense, I'm pretty sure his actions would look a-ok to the average naruto shinobi...

nugitoBambino

I feel like the mother of Mei didn't do anything wrong. It seems incredibly misplaced to blame the kiss of a pregnant woman on the actions of some petty, murderous, psychos.

nugitoBambino

it's like hand-building a ootosuki!

Green0Photon

They say the Tenseigan comes when a Byakugan meets Ootsutsuki cells. Which, uh, the Kaguya clan should count as. So just yoink some of that and Rei should be able to have a pretty neat eye. Would be funny to do that also because it might make it so that people don't know she has a Byakugan.

Green0Photon

Next, he needs to get a Sharingan to give to her, clearly. Or grab a Sharingan, put it in his head for a bit for it to marinate, and then give it to her. You know. Get your buddy to have a Byakugan *and* a Rinnegan

Azril Aditya

I hope Matsu will have grudge with the terumi over this, especially the one that kiss him even if she's likely the mother of Mei.

PiezoVolt

Great chapter really like the way you're writing the mizukage cause I also thought he was having a stroke in the beginning of the convo. And being a Jonin so early won't cause any problems for Mastu I'm sure. Also is this a month we get double Riot chapter or just an early one?

Oblivious Bookwyrm

Ao showed that, unlike the Sharingan, a non-Hyuga ninja with a Byakugan implant can activate and deactivate it at will. Doesn’t seem to be as chakra intensive as the Sharingan either, unless Ao has far more chakra than Kakashi. Makes sense; the Byakugan doesn’t have the copycat ability of the Sharingan or a more powerful upgraded form

NinjaShinobi124

Was hoping for a future tenseigan Matsu, but I'm happy Rei won't stay blind. Unexpected promotion to Jonin, Matsu is now officially in the big leagues

MaliMi

I am getting Palpatine vibes from Gengetsu. It is starting to look like he is grooming Matsu to be his successor.

Tom

Poor Rei, she always seems to have such a hard time.

Konan2020

In relation the the eye, I don't think a non Hyuuga would be able to power both eyes, but as eye in Naruto are like lightbulbs use 1 Byakugan and 1 normal eye for a shinobi or a bandit

Tay Rob

Was kind of hoping the Byakugan went to the Kaguya girl. Just does does not feel Rei has the chakra to power it and implications that like a Sharingan a transplant can't be turned off merely suppressed. Would be interesting if he just snatched up some random shinobi for some eyes.

SailorOfHouseThunderBird

Daaaaamn. Matsu is getting a reintroduction to why the weak normally can't afford to make waves. Speaking of that, i wonder if giving Rei a byakugan eye instead of a normal eye taken from anyone else is really a good idea. It'll probably end up making her a bigger yet still very weak target in the future. I wonder if Gengetsu's 180 turn about here js because he wants to try and drive a wedge between Matsu and the Terumi, because he sees the potential in Matsu to become something of an apprentice someday, or just because he thinks it's funny. Either way, i enjoyed that bit.

White Neko Knight

I'm sad Granny died, but it was a good event for the story. I'm excited Rei to the Eye. It'll help her immensely and give her an even stronger punch as Matsu's hidden ace.

Xodarap4

Oh fuck things went from success too Fubar offscreen with few notions of it happening at all

Razorfloss razor

Rip madam you will be missed. Mastus about to go on a tear and mark his territory so to speak. Whose going to be the next madam I wonder as that's actually super important. I would have figured rei but she's to young.

Qweku_v

Thanks

The Grey Mage

Could be wrong, but wouldn’t it be Yukage and not Yugakage?
