it depends on what you consider champion level, and what you consider the average for someone with 8 badges to be. in my head most of these trainers have Pokémon in the 40s range whith ace trainers ranging between the 40s and 50slvl. Brocks Pokémon in my opinion started the fick in the 60s range and are creeping into the 70s now. with that kind of a power gap the idea of Brock blowing thru them doesn't seem too far fetched in my opinion.

Jericho Rising

The psychologist should do a wonderful job preparing Brock for that.

Jean Marc Kunnen

You mean yolanda and terra right?

Chris

True but at this point going through the video game plots would be a cake walk for Brock and his allies. Some large complication or setback is on the horizon. It’s the inverse of the issue with dungeons and dragons or the MCU. With such heavy hitters like Brock, Sabrina, Lance and the others, why won’t they step in and solve the issues that Ash/Dawn/May/Silver, etc. come across? After flattening team rocket, what use would a “revised” team rocket be for Johto? Magma and Aqua is “harder” because they’re two separate orgs, but that’s it. It’s not like Kanto is level 1-50, Johto 51-100, and Hoen 101-150. Power caps out at some point. Something big is going to come out of the rats nest and it can’t just be “more strong trainers.” Otherwise we fall into power creep. Something needs to shake up, not just Brock but the existing power structure to put Kanto on the back foot. With how “strong” Brock’s elite team is and the discussion of Pokémon with different lifespans, I hope I’m wrong but I think something on the horizon is going to wipe out some of Brock’s Elite to force them to retire early if not die. Maybe during Pokémon 2000, or a plague, a targeted attack, or saving people from a disaster. It’d break team cohesion, deal a huge blow to Brock’s psyche now that he can sense aura and read his Pokémon’s thoughts and force him into a recovery period. While publicly showing one of Kanto’s strongest falling in a public way setting a politics brush fire. He already had a great secondaries in the next generation he’s been training, so it won’t be fatal but it’ll be pretty bad and take a huge time to walk back from and undo the damage. Again, hope I’m wrong but Johto on its own isn’t enough. There’s something more out there in the dark.

Also :"I smirked at that declaration. “Oh, are you just?”" Shouldn't that be "O, are you sure?"

jonah suer

Cindy picks Titan or Empress and they refuse to fight Gaia 😅🤣

Blahful

I vaguely remember, was it DMC 3? Anyhow, try Google "foolish little brother" :D

Ice fox

Really?Because I heard virgil At the beginning of one of the best Speeches in video games

Crimson wolf

Am I the only one thinkimg that Yolanda has collected years of dirt and embarrassing things that she'll shout out during the match to throw him off? Because while Forrest is rock/steel, Suzie is (rock)/fairy and tommy(I think that's his name) is (rock)/fighting Yolanda takes after Brock with rock/dark

Crimson wolf

Yolanda has dirt on Brock

TheDudeAbides

What does it mean that Cindy yelled "skins?"

Thomas Keller

Silver just showed up, which suggests that Johto plots are going to start up. It'll be interesting seeing Brock's perspective on things as an "outsider" to the plot this time, so to speak.

Thomas Keller

Just because we'd be reading it doesn't mean it won't be a while away. I *could* see this fic taking a break/resting point/ending before doing a bit of a time skip and refocusing after Lola's arc is addressed in full, but at the same time I could also see this fic continuing on directly for several years at which point we'd see Yolanda's own Journey start.

MurkyTruths

With a feint or baton pass in there somwhere

MurkyTruths

Endure, encore, endeavor, and extreme speed

Chris

Gah, this is too much calm before the storm. Something’s going to pop off and I can’t tell what. Fiore? Team Rocket? Shadow Pokémon? Blackthorn clan? Crusher Tribe? In theory the team magma/aqua stuff won’t pop off for two more years (giving ash time to go through Johto and Hoenh) Something’s going to rock the world and it’s going to be rough.

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

@Thomas Keller I would agree with you, but AN implies that we will be reading this trick. Which makes me think it will be within this season... but who knows. It might be something included in a time-skip Epilogue

Thomas Keller

As I understand it, the challenge is most likely a few years away as Yolanda is a little young for her Journey and she may prefer to hang back to gain more Gym Experience as it were beforehand

Brendan White

Sanchez: "Stand proud, Challenger; you are strong."

Matt H

Could even go one step further and use something like Whirlwind or Roar to force Brock's Pokemon out and try to win on a technicality since he's only supposed to use a single Pokemon for the challenge.

Matt H

Thanks! That sounds familiar, but I couldn't remember exactly where that was mentioned or if that was even this story. The "original" FEAR wouldn't work, then, but an alternate version using multiple Pokemon, one of which had Sturdy, still could.

Blahful

Foolish little brother, I found myself thinking, Channeling the inner Itachi I see

Matt H

Honestly, the nature of his challenge just invites tricks, gimmicks, and atypical strategies. The fact that trainers either haven't realized that or Brock's managed to shut them down somehow is the more unbelievable thing. Brock has, basically, created a reverse gauntlet for himself and the appropriate course of action should be pretty obvious once people realize that. Something like inflicting a status effect first, lowering the stats of Brock's Pokemon with the next couple Pokemon, and then finishing off with one or two Pokemon with a type advantage is the "obvious" answer. If Brock's main team can all, somehow, routinely win 1 vs 6 in situations like that it's a little hard to understand the powerscaling going on these days. People who do well in the Conference can become Ace trainers, Ace trainers can pull off close fights against Brock, but Brock is somehow able to win (or almost win) 1 vs 6 against some of the strongest competitors in the Conference? From my perspective, Brock either needs to start crushing basically any non-Gym Leader or Elite Four member a lot more than he currently is or he needs to start losing a lot more of these challenges.

BronRevo

Steel is resistant to Rock attacks. Flying is weak to Rock attacks. Ergo, Skarmory didn't suffer to rock-type attacks. I think what Brock is thinking here is that Forrest brought out Skarmory thinking that Brock was going to use rock type moves but Sanchez is Rock-Electric, thus the quick knock out with an electric move.

the pyro stick figure 76

Skarmory didn’t suffer the weakness to rock-type attacks. Did you mean ground type attacks?

nugitoBambino

Terra uses baby-doll eyes, but it's a fake-out. the second Empress looks away in contempt - boom! hyperbeam to the face

Al

Yolanda is going to fight Empress. Won’t that be a show

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

Early in the story the author has Brock mention looking for items like a Focus Sash, but finding out they aren't a real thing. (As in, it was just a game mechanic.) So that won't work...

Focus Armstrong

Surge had one before during the rocket fight and during the giant tentacruel intermission. It’s rare and powerful but not new.

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

I know you have this plan for Yolanda to One-shot Brock, but can she do it *outside* an official match? It's just... Look. I know it's not cheating to use tricks to end someone's team, but it feels kinda cheap to have someone on Yolanda's level defeat someone of Brock's level using a trick. I mean, Yolanda isn't even an official trainer and Brock is #1 ACE Trainer in Indigo! It's... yeah.

Jean Marc Kunnen

Surge used his against will

Matt H

First thought is Yolanda requesting to fight Titan and then leading with Terra. I think Titan would be more hesitant to fight his little sister than his mom, but I think he'd manage. Otherwise there's always F.E.A.R., but I'm not sure how prevalent Focus Sashes are or how exactly they work in-story. Even without a Focus Sash a Sturdy Aggron with Endeavor followed by an Arcanine with Extreme Speed could be deadly. With just a single Pokemon for the challenge Brock is inherently vulnerable to Perish Song.

SailorOfHouseThunderBird

Awesome chapter, Happy New Year 🎆🎇🎆

Anareth

Has Magnezone been publicly revealed yet? I thought they proved the evolution less than a week ago. I buy Forrest figuring it out given his contacts, but I'd expect a major reaction from the crowd

Antony Wilson

Love it

2222aq

Yolanda has 5 fear arons trained up and ready to go

David Green

Ooft just shows that one year really isn't enough to reach the top of the conference

BronRevo

Thanks for the chapter. Happy New Year all!

HoldTightAndPretendItsAPlan

Edit: I recomend rewording the sentence "Or, he had been back at the start of the year." to something more like "Or, what they had been back at the start of the year."
