Hi Dogen. One comment, regarding the 2nd major exceptions in the video. You said, that multiples of a 1 000 up to 10 000 and multiples of a 10 000 up to 100 000 combined with 円 are 平板. But later you bring the example of 17 000 and 53 000. But these two belong to neither of those two categories. They are neither the multiples of a 1 000 up to 10 000 and nor the multiples of a 10 000 up to 100 000. So the rule would be multiples of a 1 000 up to 100 000 or any clean thousand up to 100 000. Sorry for nitpicking, I just found it slightly confusing, but the 17k and 53k examples made it clear to me. I love the series and it is tremendously useful for me. Cheers!

Never mind: I just recalled the rule from lesson 69 when the last mora is the "special sound" ん.

Maybe it's just my laptop, but for 13円, your graphic at time 40 seconds seems to show the downstep on the first mora さ of さん, rather than on the ん. Wouldn't this make the number 13 中高　in the combination rather than　尾高 ? What am I misunderstanding here?

A very nice lesson as always! By the way, 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc. aren't squares of 10 but actually powers of 10.

Hi Stephen! Yes, due to the nature of the ん in this position it will assume some of the qualities of え, which makes it sound like that, as explained in an earlier lesson on the ん sound. Cheers!

I noticed while listening to this that my ear is not catching the ん at the end of 万 in 万円 (well, more like my ear is hearing the え from 円 bleeding into it), so I'm hearing something more like 「まええん」 instead. If I focus hard I can sometimes barely distinguish it, though. I'm not sure what to do about that other than just being aware of it and trying to train my ear with more listening, but I wanted to mention it in case others were struggling with that as well. :)

Hi Axel! I would encourage you to watch a movie once, and then to rip the audio from that movie and listen to it during your commute. I used to do this while studying abroad and it helped immensely! Cheers!

Dogen, (unrelated to this episode) you recommend to watch a Japanese tv show on repeat to improve... I have no time to watch tv drama on repeat however I have time during my commute to listen to something. Any recommendation?
