Ugh, I was caught in a common misconception. Thanks for setting me straight! According to the Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix), they have indeed been profitable since the pre-streaming era, with tens of billions in costs taking the form of long-term debt. I guess the next question is, why doesn't Grey take out a loan so that our Patreon fees can be reduced? 😁

Brittany Willis

I'm honestly so torn. I want this commentary so, so much. I thrive on your content. But $5/month is a lot when compared to other media consumption/supporting others. It's such a difficult decision. Is it possible to perhaps have one video at the $3 tier so we can judge what we would be potentially be receiving for bumping. NO PROBLEM AT ALL with giving the $3 tier, I know $2 extra might not seem too much but with other factors to consider it does place that burden. Sadly it seems we have gone back to the bundles of cable package days in a way, needing to subscribe and pay so many services trying to divide us. I prioritize individual creators as much as possible, but it's a lot of decisions. After seeing some comments here, I think perhaps a one time preview of this commentary might help people, myself included, move up a tier. Just a thought! Thank you for giving all you do, Grey. You ALWAYS make my day.

Yes this won't give you as much happiness, but Grey makes more niche content. Niche content cost more to make up that not that many people want it.

Ryan G.

Same boat.

Ryan G.

Yeah, I'm a 3$ patreon, I only support a couple creators and thats the most i can afford for it, kind of wack that I can't access this even though I'm one of the funders, you could've mentioned it was required 5$ minimum.

Stephen Pilolla

Seriously, any opportunity to listen to Grey talk for an hour plus is worth $5 to me.

sweetrollsundergrounddog

Grey is my favorite creator. I became a patron for $1 hoping I could see the video. I had no information that I needed to pay $5 to see it, so I cancelled my patronage.

Jorg Jorgensen

Ayoub, what does that matter? It does not change the value proposition for me. I love the videos, but a $1 a month over the long term seems pretty fair to me.

Jorg Jorgensen

Michael, if you belive Netflix operates at a loss, I have some land to sell you.

Matthew

Not gonna lie- got made when I realized $3 a month didn't cover this. I get not letting people go back months or years if that's a thing, but maybe 30-60 days to view them? If I were paying $5 a video for that, would be easier. $5 a month, video or no video? Just doesn't seem worth it

MrTridac

That's abuse. Eventually: that's why we can't have nice things. Because of people like you.

Matthew Edmunds

Guys this is easy, if you are only willing to do $3 a month for this perk, then subscribe at the $5 tier every other month. Now you'll be able to consume all the five tier perks $2.50 a month + a little patience :)

Jana Simmons

I'd love to, but that is too expensive. I support many creators and bumping you up to $5 would mean I would have to stop supporting several others. Commentaries sound great, but that price is too high.

They also have several millions of users more than he does :)

vorbei

Good video but $5 a month is hard to justify when you barely make one video a month.

Netflix is hugely profitable. Has been since 2003. Last year they made US$1.866 billion in profit .

Tedd

The difference is Grey doesn't pay license fees to other copyright holders per view.

Predelnik

Interesting, so it was available for all the patreons the moment it was posted. I watched the half and downloaded the rest through youtube history. Am I freebooter? :)

Michael

But Netflix operates at a huge loss, so they can afford to subsidize your fees! When Masayoshi Son decides to start giving Grey millions of dollars without expecting any profit in return for X years, then maybe we can start talking about reduced fees...

Jorg Jorgensen

I am sorry, but $1 a month seems reasonable... $5 does not. I pay $9/month for Netflix... you are not yet producing videos that give me more than half the entertainment value I derive from Netflix.

Coldes

I feel like having the commentary at $5 is a bit too much, setting it at $3 would be completely fine with me and I would not hesitate at all to bump my pledge to that. Having it at $5 justmakes me stay at $1 since it's too big of a jump

Martin Embeh

Why is it 5$ though???

Bruce Grembowski

Why do I keep getting emails about things in the $5 tier when I'm not in the $5 tier? Most annoying.

Santiago Zavarce

Any tier above the 5$ one can watch this right?

Someonetobe

wait this is march 1st not april 1st

Santiago Zavarce

So Grey team tier

Ray Palmer

$5: Wallpaper access and the ability to comment on livestreams and view the Grey Directors' commentary archive.

Blue Jay

I'm excited for this!

Santiago Zavarce

What tier can we see this live stream

Santiago Zavarce

So he will make a new post with the url to the live stream right?

ApocalypseMo

presumably the $5 tier since it says so in the tier description

Kira Stegner

Sounds interesting!

sarah Bybee

Me: of course Grey. Take your time. You do you, my guy. Also me: *refresh refresh refresh refresh refresh*

Jackie McCurdy

In the post above Grey writes ... Thank you for your patience in advance today. I'll put up the URL on a new post once it's ready. Talk you you soon(ish).

ywecur

On which tier can we see these videos?

Don Rude

The emails are still going out but the tumbleweed video seems live on the U-tubs. I don't see a Reddit post yet but maybe after he has that in place he'll be able to start streaming

ApocalypseMo

an ETA would be brilliant so we can plan around it Mr. Grey

Jackie McCurdy

Patience. He’l. Post a URL when he’s ready to start.

Josh speaks

Right on. Good video grey!

Insert Fact Here

It said live on YouTube, am I missing something?

Jackie McCurdy

Vid says yes.

Jon Champagne

Do you intend to try and make it available on demand afterwards if possible?

Ray Palmer

I sadly won't be able to join, but I just watched the video, will someone ask Grey if gene drive came up in his research?

Marsstriker

This'll be fun.

Jackie McCurdy

Waiting for the URL.. patience young patron!

Kevin Costello

Please check your messages grey!

Craig Woodward

Hmmm... I don't see a button when told to press the button to find out more?

Jackie McCurdy

No, he mentions in the vid that you can watch it later, too.

Norm

Looking forward to it, CGP Grey. :-) Keep up the hard/good work over there. - Your grateful Patreon Supporters.

Nils Tillander

Will it be live only?

Zachary Gerard

Yup, becoming a paying patrion today... I should have previously but reasons. Love you and your content CPGgrey. You rock.
