Hebert Disassembly Services Chapter 4: Choice///

It’s crazy how much your life can change in only a few hours, and the difference between Old Taylor and New Taylor is hilariously obvious. In short, New Taylor was more like how she used to be before Emma lost her mind. And nowhere near as jaded or cynical as she used to be.
If she’d still been her old self, she’d never join the Wards. Either because she didn’t want to deal with any more teenage drama, or the mistaken belief that she needed to build some credibility to be taken seriously. Which was a foolish assumption to make, given that Vista’s power was terrifyingly effective, and yet their PR team (heh, PR team, PRT) turned Vista into the team mascot and a figurative princess.
Vista certainly complained about that during their private pizza party, also Cyn loved Hawaiian pizza… how she even ate it well, Taylor’s not going to unpack that.
So, between her now effectively perfect (or near perfect) mental clarity and her common sense that she would’ve ignored before she changed, she was seriously contemplating joining the Wards. Sure, they might not actually make use of her abilities, but it was the Bay, and conflict was god damn inevitable no matter how safe a patrol she was put on.
Glancing over at Cyn, her Dad having left an hour ago, and it was midnight, she wondered what the mischievous drone was even thinking.
“I Am. Curating All The. Pirated Anime Uzi Has. To Find Something. We Could Watch. Together.” That was actually pretty sweet, and probably the only way to get anime, seeing as Leviathan turned Japan into a third-world nation.
And she didn’t want to deal with the import costs from ordering anything from Aleph.
“That sounds fun,” Taylor replied. Cyn wasn’t too bad, just terrifying. Casually and existentially terrifying. “So how human can I get my body?” She asked, figuring it didn’t hurt to ask. “You said I could give myself feet, but what about a normal mouth and hands? And a normal sense of touch?”
“Just Use The. CAD Program. The Nanites. Will Handle. The Rest,” Cyn answered, “Though I Think. You Are Overreacting. You Have Been. Having No Issues.”
“I know I haven’t,” She replied, rolling her eyes, “It’s for other people. To make me more relatable. I know I’m already cute, but I could be cuter. You know, like Tessa.” And Tessa had been cute.
Cyn grumbled, “Fine. Whatever. I Do Not. Understand What. Organics Find Attractive.” She said, “That Said. Uzi Does Find. Big Brother N. And V. ‘Weirdly Hot’.”
“Uzi is weird and a drone herself,” Taylor replied, waving it off, “You call her weird, so don’t think you can claim she isn’t now.”
“Honestly I. Think Tessa Was. A Robophile. And Planning. To Give J. Naughty After Market Modifications.” Cyn said, “Humans Are Weird. And Gross. And Kind Of Cringe.”
“... Aren’t robots also robophiles by default?” Taylor asked, “And it’s only natural to want to get closer to people you care about… though, uh, usually not that close.”
Cyn just looked at her, “Fair. Enough. Lick.” She said as she licked her optic.
“Admittedly, that’s also part of the reason I wanted to check how human I could be,” Taylor said with a shrug, “Just in case I find someone to love like that.”
“You Can. Be As Human As You Want. Except You Don’t. Need The Bathroom. And Can Eat. Toxic Things. Humans Can Not. Enjoy.” Cyn said.
Taylor shrugged and focused, focusing first on the image of Tessa that Cyn had showed her (figuring that a known good body shape could just be altered afterwards) and then on what she remembered herself looking like… if bustier, just a little taller, a little more filled out, and much more robotic; her eyes were still displays as a key feature.
“Scratch Scratch. You Know. You Remind Me A. Lot Of Tessa. You Are Not. Secretly Australian. Are You? Curious Head Tilt.” Cyn asked curiously.
“Unless dad or mom was hiding something about their family,” Taylor started, “No, I’m pretty sure I’m not. I don’t usually mind spiders, though, does that count?”
“Maybe. You Know. You Could Give. Yourself An Australian Accent. While You Go Out. And Be A Hero.” Cyn suggested as she kicked her feet like a child.
“That’s a really good idea,” Taylor said with a nod, “Thanks, Cyn- wow, that felt weird to say. You’re being very helpful, which makes me really concerned. What are you planning?” She couldn’t help but narrow her eyes at the little menace.
“Pout. I Can. Be Helpful! Outrage. Huff.” If Cyn didn’t self-narrate her outrage would be more convincing; currently, it just made her look even cuter.
“You’re adorable,” She noted, “But you’re also a compulsive prankster.” Which… if Cyn didn’t already have a name, she’d have worried about her doing a Clockblocker. “What do you think of the Wards we’ve met?” They’d only met three up to that point: Vista, Clockblocker, and Gallant.
“I Like Vista. The PRT Is Sleeping. On Her Abilities. And The Inefficiency Upsets Me. Clockblocker Is An Idiot. A Nice Idiot. But An Idiot. And Gallant Is Strange. And He Keeps Looking At. Me Funny.” Cyn answered as her fingers fidgeted before holding them like t-rex arms and walking around.
Cyn was far too cute to be as terrifying as she was. “He can see emotions, supposedly, so maybe he wasn’t seeing yours? Or he was seeing yours, and that confused him because you’re just a hologram?”
“I Am. The Void. He Should. Be Terrified! Dramatic pose.” Cyn exclaimed dramatically… for a monotone as she struck a pose, “The Void Hungers. For Chicken Nuggies.”
Taylor’s eyebrow rose, “And that’s probably why he wasn’t. That said, I’m a bit hungry too, and I’m pretty sure they said the canteen was open at this time, let’s see if they have any.”
“Maybe We. Can Ask. For Some. Deep Fat Frier. Oil? Hopeful Look.”
“They probably have some used oil around too,” She replied with a shrug, getting up and making her way down. “If it hasn’t been used by some tinker, or something.”
“Mmm Contaminants. Tastes Like Progress. And Human Shortsightedness. Giggle.” Cyn said.
“Not that many, mostly from the food it was cooking,” Taylor said, “And a bit of metal. Oh, and carcinogens, but that’s from cooking it. I think most of it is turned into bio-diesel nowadays.” That’s what she’d read, anyway. And the internet never lies 10% of the time.
“Lets Go. You Are Making Me Hungry. Tug Tug Pull.” Now, Taylor couldn’t help but giggle as she let Cyn drag her along.
The canteen was a few flights of stairs down, but they moved faster than the elevator when they just… jumped over the railing and fell the whole way. She splayed out her wings to avoid cracking the concrete on landing, but that still resulted in making a trooper guarding the stairwell jump and reach for his gun before realizing that it was, indeed, just her. And Cyn, who was clinging to her back like a monkey.
“Get Snuck Upon. Giggle.” Cyn snarked.
Adorable murder machine antics aside, it didn’t take too long to get to the canteen… where she saw an extremely unexpected face.
Or Visor, in this case.
“When Dragon said you didn’t sleep enough,” Taylor started, “I hadn’t expected her to be proven right quite this quickly.”
Armsmaster just snorted faintly, “Dragon keeps getting onto me about my habits. But I’m healthy, so I don’t see a problem,” He said, “Midnight snack?” He guessed.
“Yeah, Cyn got hungry talking about chicken nuggets and that made me hungry,” She freely admitted, “As an aside, how do you like my new look?” Her arms went out and she did a little twirl for him, her military dress style clothes swishing around her new body. “Not even a hologram.”
“Talented. I assume you downloaded information regarding tailoring?” He asked with a faint twitch of his lips.
“Oh no,” She replied with a smile, “This was something a friend of Cyn’s once made. You know, before she died.” Maybe she was getting too blase about that; it would probably traumatize people at some point.
“Ah, very impressive.” He said with a nod, “I assume this is to be your uniform when you go out?”
“Yeah, for ‘civilian’ life I’ll probably just use a hologram,” She said, “It took at least some energy to change myself to this, so I figured I’d be a bit frugal with it. Or just not bother with it, it’s not like I need… school anymore. Ever. I can literally download PhDs.”
Armsmaster snorted, “School is more important than just education. Socialization, mainly in my experience,” He said, “And if you decide to join the Wards, school is a sticking point with the Youth Guard unless you have very valid reasons.”
“I can’t just get a GED?” Taylor sighed, “And I assume getting bullied into triggering wouldn’t count? Something like ‘just put her in a different school’ or something, right?”
“You could, but they would still insist on socialization, if nothing else,” Armsmaster said, “And if you join, there is a good chance you’ll be transferred to Arcadia.”
“Everyone is so willing to give me good arguments,” Taylor grumped good-naturedly, “Not even giving me the chance to be a teenager about it, huh? Alright, sure, I’ll join the Wards… and wish the PR department good luck, cause they’re the ones that are going to deal with that gremlin,” She said, pointing at a Cyn that was, right at that moment, trying to drink frying oil despite being a hologram.
And succeeding, somehow…
That time Taylor clearly heard a very amused chuckle, “I’m sure Assault will want to sell tickets,” He commented.
“If he does, I’ll be selling popcorn,” She replied with a nod. “Anyway, do you think I can meet the rest of the Wards soon? I know Shadow Stalker is apparently not the nicest person, but I’d like to make my own judgment before coming to any decisions.”
For a moment, the older hero looked conflicted. But only for a moment. “Why don’t you wrangle her, get your nuggets, and I’ll… give you some bad news and some good news.”
Ominous. But since she’d gotten powers that described an easy 80% of what she’d heard spoken, it wasn’t like that made her not want to agree. “Alright, sure,” She started before turning to Cyn and walking over to the nervous cook, “Cyn, stop bothering the workers. They need that oil to cook the nuggets.”
“He Is. Denying Me. My Nuggies. Indignant Huff. And The Oil. Is Good.” Cyn said, “Fear Me. Organics. Roar Snarl.”
“I’ll turn off the holograms,” Taylor warned.
“You Are. No Fun.” Cyn grumbled, “Pout Scowl.” She added before clambering up on Taylor before resting on her shoulders, “Climb Criss Cross Applesauce.”
“Sorry about her,” Taylor sighed to the man, “We’ll have two servings of nuggets… and a thing of used oil. Just a… robot thing.”
“Whatever, kid, just keep that freaky-looking little sister out of the kitchen,” One of them said.
“Now that’s just rude,” Taylor glared, “She’s not that freaky looking, and how is that at all professional? Aren’t you guys supposed to be friendly to friendly parahumans? What if a Case 53 appeared and heard you say that?”
“But. Understandable,” Cyn said.
“Kid, it’s midnight and most of us are pulling a double shift,” Another cook said, “And Joe here’s never liked parahumans. Bad experience, what with this city being how it is. Let me just get everything for you so you can see what Armsy wants.”
“You guys should unionize if they have you pulling double shifts too often,” Taylor said easily, “It worked for the dockworkers, at least.”
“Dot Dot Dot. J Would Hate You,” Cyn noted, “Giggle. But Admittedly. That Is Probably. My Fault.”
Nuggets and oil acquired from the nice man, the two left to find Armsmaster, wondering what he had to tell them.

“Ms. Hebert?” Armsmaster asked cautiously.
“She Is Processing. While She Is Psychologically Sound. The Emotions Remain,” Cyn said.
“Alright…” He sighed, “Now for the good news, Sophia, Shadow Stalker, is being moved to a Simiurgh containment zone. She also began bullying over two years before she joined the Wards; we aren’t sure why the school didn’t deal with her beforehand, but we had nothing to do with it afterwards.”
“That…” Taylor paused and readjusted her voice, “That’s good. So, it’s probably a good thing I didn’t meet all of them together. I might’ve done something rash.” She paused again, “Or Cyn would.”
“I wouldn’t! Outraged Huff!”
No one believed her.
“That’s why we were doing things slowly,” He admitted, “Has this changed your opinion on joining the Wards?”
“I…” Taylor frowned, “I think I will. I like the ones I’ve met so far, and none of them liked her.”
“We Are. A Package Deal. Though.” Cyn commented as she drank her oil through a crazy straw… that she didn’t have a second ago…
“... Our holograms are insanely versatile,” Taylor noted, shaking her head, “Don’t make the PR guys cry too hard, please.”
“No. Promises. Nom!”
Armsmaster’s lip quirked again in amusement, or at least that’s what Taylor assumed.
“Assuming you don’t need to sleep off this night of being awake, then,” He started, “We could announce your debut as early as tomorrow. Do you have a name picked out?”
“I Am Cyn. And She Is Absolute.” Cyn said.
Taylor just snorted, “Might as well, I’m terrible with names anyway. All the good ones are taken,” She said.
“I got lucky myself,” Armsmaster said with a faint chuckle. “Well, I’ll report it, and when your father is awake, we can make everything official. Just let PR know if you change your mind, and please don’t change it at the press conference to something like ‘Murder Drone’ that would not go over well.”
“Why Are You Looking At Me Like That. I Did Nothing. Giggle.” Cyn was such a little shit.
“Cyn,” Taylor started, “If you’re a good girl, I’ll get you premium gasoline and oil after.” The stick might have worked on its own, but it was always good to add a carrot too.
“I Will Be An Angel! Excited Grin.” That got a full-on laugh from Armsmaster.
“Don’t laugh, you’ll be collaborating with her as much as me with tinkering,” Taylor said with an evil smirk, “Best consider how you treat her now.” Then she decided to leave him to his dread, “Have a good night, Armsmaster.”
She flew out of the room before he could reply. Maybe Cyn was rubbing off on her, but acting like that was fun.

So, I'm sure everyone has heard about the explosion that took out a hallway and lockers in the school. No one was hurt thankfully but still it was strange, and given that Armsmater was investigating I assume that means parahumans were involved somehow.
What I can't work out is why would anyone bother?

As much as I’m partial to good conspiracy theories… it is Winslow. No one that goes there likes it.

I’m just saying, if there’s any school that could cause a tinker to trigger its winslow. They might have bombed it to close it down. Or because they wanted to hide a crime in those lockers and so blew them up!
Maybe there were tinker-tech drugs there? Or dead bodies stuffed inside! The smell was really awful over there so I didn’t check it out.

Fair enough… man it’s so strange to say that to you.
But still if it wasn’t parahuman related why would Armsmaster be there?

Winslow is prime recruiting ground, so I doubt the gangs are sending a message.
If anything it’s probably a new parahuman
Though will they be a Hero or Villain?
That’s the question.

So, as per usual I heard whispers and rumors, and being who I am I went to my sources to verify. And the rumors might be true! It's too soon to really say but there's rumors of the PRT introducing a new Ward!
Technically two? But I couldn't really dig anything up about this supposed second.
Anyway from what I managed to find out, the new cape is called Absolute and looks like a robot? Maybe some sort of Changer power. But aside from the expected Brute rating, I couldn't find out anything more.
So as always I turn to you PHO! Just remember to keep on topic, I don't want another thread to severely derail like last time. And let's try to keep it civil people, but I won't hold my breath on that one.
