My guess is that the automated process we saw with the shadow magic and the healing was the katana sword he got from the commander. Since the hero wrote: "....my successor, and guides you in your hour of need" on its blade.

I like the show, but I think the pacing is too fast, they aren't letting any of the moments breathe
