Highly recommend The Innocents and The Haunting (1963) even if The Innocents doesn't win. They'd make a good double feature, they both deal with very repressed young women and ambiguously supernatural Gothic horror through some really creative cinematography. The original book The Haunting of Hill House is also well worth checking out- they toned down the lesbian themes in the film adaptation, though they're not gone altogether.

Being able to hear your commentary on Get Out in real time would be amazing as a companion to your Black Trauma v Black Horror essay.

Yo that’s my birthday!!!!

Oh, do watch it when you have the chance! The first time I ever saw just a bit of it I was pretty young (no more than 10 or so), caught a scene partway into the movie on tv and it freaked me out completely even though it was almost all suggestion and atmosphere. I was actually afraid to watch the whole thing for years because of that! Very different once I was an adult and saw it, of course, but though it's been a few years since I saw it last, my memory is it still holds up as quite effective.

I'm reading The Turn of the Screw for the first time right now so also pulling for The Innocents, although it looks like it won't make it! If I get a chance maybe I'll still check it this month.

I chose The Innocents because I particularly love eerie psychological horror that has an element of uncertainty. Also, I love the story it was adapted from (Turn of the Screw), and the marvelous Haunting of Bly Manor that was inspired by it. And it doesn't hurt that it came out the year I was born! That being said, I'm all for Carrie as more straightforward horror. I like all the others, too, but I've seen some of them too many times to want to revisit (and my resilience to some kinds of gore/terror has diminished over time, sadly). My tiny 2¢!
