Being a professor at Beacon sounded like a dream come true. A job teaching the next generation of Huntsmen. The average Huntsman graduate usually spent a few years doing contract work before moving on to something else. Some people kept the adventuring lifestyle while others found ways to more permanent careers. Sometimes it was working as bodyguards or local protectors while others swerved to being celebrities and tournament fighters.
Jaune knew he was lucky. Most professors needed to be in the field for at least ten years before they were even considered for the position. There were a few exceptions - Doctor Oobleck went straight after getting his doctorate - but they were pretty rare. Especially for someone like him. Fresh graduate straight out of the academy and he already got an offer. For some reason, Professor Goodwitch - Glynda, he reminded himself - took a liking to him. He wasn't the best or the brightest, but she said she saw something in him. He was grateful to her for it.
Still, it wasn't exactly easy. Valeans were individualistic to a fault and teachers had to wrangle them to get anywhere. They all had their own methods. Glynda used her terrifying reputation, Oobleck spoke too fast to let them get a word in edgewise, and Port...well, his lectures were so soul-crushing that he doubted anyone would have the will to try and be rebellious. Granted, that meant at least half of his class was half-asleep most of the time, but still.
Jaune? Well, he was still having issues there. At 22 years old, he wasn't much older than the students he was meant to teach. Beacon students started at 18 when they entered. Old enough to be adults in every sense of the word but still fresh from teenage rebellion and thinking they were invincible. The fact that they were training to be the future protectors of mankind only worsened their ego. Huntsmen were known across Remnant as being the best of the best. While they weren't treated the exact same across Remnant - Vacuo placed a higher value on them compared to Atlas, for example - the position of a Huntsman demanded respect from just about anyone.
Valeans valued their independence. Not as much as Vacuo - those guys seemed to think any form of widespread government was oppression - but moreso than Mistral and Atlas. Huntsmen were heroes, celebrities, and larger-than-life figures. Almost everyone wanted to be them, and when they passed Beacon, they were riding high. Usually, the attitude was beaten out of them by the time they got to the second year, but a few kept it up.
Still, Jaune took it all on the chin. He knew that becoming a Professor at such a young age was almost unheard of. Alright, technically he was just an assistant professor, but Beacon was unconventional enough that they allowed him to teach his own classes without needing a monitor. Dust Science. It might've shocked people to know, but he was one of the best in his grade at it despite Crocea Mors not being Dust-dependent. Some of his old friends thought it was weird. He was pretty good at math too, which they considered blasphemous.
And ironically, it was a non-Valean who was giving him the most trouble...
"The application of Fire Dust is varied and numerous," Jaune started, directing the laser pointer to the PowerPoint. No one would ever find Dust Science exciting, but at least the students considered it more useful than 'Legends of Remnant'. Jaune had no idea why the old headmaster insisted that fairy tales and folklore had their own personal subject. Actually, he was an enigma all on his own. He was friendly and open, which was why his unannounced retirement during Jaune's last year came as such a surprise.
Glynda didn't seem happy about it...
He was midway going to the next slide when a hand shot up. Jaune bit back a frown and forced a smile on his face, "Yes, Ms. Schnee."
"Your information is outdated, Mr. Arc," Weiss Schnee said, a syrupy sweet smile on her face that did nothing to hide the smugness in her tone, "A study was conducted four weeks prior that showed exciting new applications for Fire Dust, particularly on weaponry. It's by Professor Markov. I'm sure you'll find it an enlightening read."
"...Thank you, Ms. Schnee. I'll be sure to take that into account." Jaune took a deep breath, "Now, to continue-"
"Also-" she cut in again, still smiling, "-some of the statistics you used seem...miscalculated." Wrong, her eyes said.
"Ms. Schnee, I assure you that I used the latest research in Dust Applications: Volume 8."
"A Valean book." She didn't scoff, but he could hear it plain as day, "Respectable enough, but I would suggest using The Science and Properties of Dust: Volume 13 instead. They've shown far more accurate results." An Atlesian book. He knew about it, of course, and he also knew that more than a few of their research was inflated to get headlines. Not that he said that, of course. That would just lead to an argument and that was the last thing he needed.
"I'll take that under consideration. Now..."
The next hour and a half were filled with interruptions and 'suggestions'. Weiss made sure to always frame it as helpful comments, but he could tell it for what it was. The students already had a hard time respecting him given his age, but Weiss seemed to take it as a personal challenge to one-up him at every turn. Maybe she thought that by showing off how much 'smarter' she was it would convince the other professors that she should be the leader of her team. He'd heard about how annoyed she was being passed up from the position.
The only saving grace, if it could even be called that, was that no one was egging her on or helping her. He couldn't tell if it was because the students found it too much even for them or if they thought she was being a teacher's pet.
Team RWBY wasn't much of a fan either. Ruby's cheeks were flushed and she sunk in her seat, embarrassed by her partner's antics. Yang groaned about Weiss ruining her reputation. Blake didn't say anything, though he didn't miss the way she sighed and scooted her chair just a bit farther. He didn't know them very well, but it was clear that they weren't exactly on board with their teammate trying to knock the professor down a peg.
The rest of the lesson felt frigidly slow and he didn't even bother stopping himself from sighing when it finally ended. Two weeks. Two weeks of Weiss doing everything she could to undermine him. And he could hardly lecture her or put her in detention. She'd play dumb and say she was simply trying to help, so why would he be mad at her? She made sure to never insult him and always framed her 'advice' as well-meaning suggestions. He couldn't exactly put her into detention for suggesting reading materials.
Jaune gathered up his stuff and made his way back to the staff room. Less than a month ago he'd been so bright-eyed and eager, and now he was dealing with daily migraines. He knew it could be worse - a bratty student was hardly the end of the world - but it was still depressing that this was how his first month of being an (assistant) professor was going.
He'd just placed his stuff on his table when he heard a voice, "Long day, Jaune?" He turned and laughed when he saw Glynda giving him a wry smile.
"Yeah, could say that." He sighed and brought a hand across his jaw. He considered growing a beard to try and make himself look older, but no luck so far. Dad said that he didn't grow anything but whiskers till he was thirty. After that, he was practically a lumberjack, "Students being difficult, you know what it's like."
"Indeed I do." She chuckled softly, "First years are at their most...difficult. They believe they've got it all figured out and can do no wrong. It was both charming and frustrating when I first started out, but eventually, that rebellious attitude became more irritating than anything else. It never changes. Young men and women in the prime of their lives believing themselves invincible. Personally, I blame the propaganda. Tell people that Huntsmen are invincible and they'll believe it soon enough."
"This feels different..."
"Oh? Perhaps we can talk about it in more detail over tea?"
"I'd love to, but aren't you busy?" Being the Headmistress was a taxing job. It actually made her miss being a teacher, she told him.
"I was told by Dr. Wood to take prescribed breaks or else he'd have me committed."
"...That's a joke, right?"
"I've got some new tea from Vacuo you might like." Alright, so she just wasn't gonna answer that. Cool.
Glynda's room was far more spacious and ornate compared to the regular teacher's dorm rooms. It wasn't by choice. Her old room had been far more sparse. She'd inherited the old Headmaster's room and simply didn't have the time to re-decorate everything. Or so she claimed. Jaune wondered if maybe something was holding her back. There were rumors that the Headmistress and his Deputy were a lot closer than professional expectations, though none of them pried.
The tea was a deep blue color that he'd never seen before. And as expected of something that came from Vacuo, it had a bitter taste that lingered on his tongue. Jaune coughed and smiled politely as Glynda drank her cup without issue. She always did have weird tastes, "So, your class?" Glynda asked, setting her cup down and refilling it. The ornate tea set stuck out. Collecting them was one of the few indulgences Glynda allowed herself to have. Anyone pointing out that it was an 'old lady' habit was quick to regret it.
"It's one of my students." Jaune sighed, "Weiss Schnee. Do you know her?"
"It would be hard not to." Glynda hummed, "The second daughter of Jacques Schnee and heiress to the SDC. Her choosing to go to Beacon ruffled some feathers back at Atlas, though I expect that has more to do with her choosing to be a Huntress in general rather than being a do-nothing entitled snob." She said the insult in the same way one talked about the weather. He knew that she was Atlesian, though nothing besides that. Glynda was pretty tight-lipped about her personal life, "Her transcripts were excellent and she excelled across the board."
"It's not her grades I'm concerned about." Jaune set his cup down, "She's...entitled." And that was putting it nicely, "She thinks she deserves to be the leader of Team RWBY and refuses to believe otherwise. She also feels the need to make herself the biggest person in the room. I knew it was gonna be hard getting the respect of the students since I'm barely any older than they are, but for the most part, it's just them thinking they can get away with goofing off in class. Ms. Schnee is different. It feels like she wants - needs - to prove that she's better than everyone, and what better target than the professor who hasn't established himself yet?"
"I assume disciplining her is out of the question."
"If only. She doesn't act out in a way that can get her in trouble. Maybe correcting the professor or recommending new reading material is seen as presumptuous, but you can't exactly give someone detention for it." His shoulders sagged, "It's just...so frustrating. It's obvious that she knows what she's doing but I can't call her out on it. That only makes her push harder. Would you believe that she told me that a Valean book wasn't as good as an Atlesian one?"
"Altesians are known for their nationalistic pride. James is much the same way." Glynda sighed.'
"Yeah, I just...I don't know what to do. Should I bite the bullet and give her detention? Have an argument with her in front of the entire class? Just sit there and take it?"
"Let me tell you a secret, Jaune." She crossed her right leg over her left, "Beacon is liable for many things, but there are just as many that are off-the-books, so to speak. The Council understands that the future protectors of mankind can't be coddled."
"What do you mean?" Jaune's brows furrowed.
"I mean that future Huntsmen and Huntresses aren't treated with kid gloves. They're being trained to fight the Grimm and other threats. If we coddle them now then they will fail when they finally arrive in the real world." Her words were calm and measured, but Jaune didn't miss the subtle force behind them, "Ms. Schnee's behavior has been reinforced by her upbringing. She likely grew up getting everything she wanted and never being told no. After all, who would dare refuse the heiress to the SDC?"
"So what should I do?"
"You need to remove that mindset from her." Glynda frowned, "We've had students who never had their egos dispersed and it led to sub-par Huntsmen. They believed that they could do no wrong. Remember Mr. Winchester?"
"Cardin? Yeah. Why?" He was a couple of years ahead of Jaune. And a real asshole to boot.
"He's had his license suspended indefinitely." Translation: the Huntsman equivalent of a dishonorable discharge, "His behavior was abhorrent. He believed himself above others and that consequences didn't apply to him. I don't have to tell you how dangerous a mindset that is in anyone, let alone a Huntsman. And so, we've been given the greenlight to ensure that things like that don't happen again. The students won't thank us for it, but their careers will be all the better for it."
"So...what do you want me to do? Yell at her?"
"No. Simply yelling at someone rarely ever achieves results. They need...discipline." She picked up her scroll and tapped the screen, "Here, I sent you some reading material that should prove valuable."
"I mean, I appreciate all this, but what if Weiss does something? You know, goes to the council or throws her name around? Like you said, she's got a big reputation."
"A reputation, yes, but thankfully for us, Huntsmen Academies are largely apolitical. We certainly play the game but after Mr. Winchester's suspension, the other members of the council began to frown upon Huntsmen with influential parents trying to game the system. It looks quite badly on them when the Huntsmen aren't up to snuff. I'm sure Ms. Schnee will try to throw her weight around, but please don't let it intimidate you. Beacon - I - will handle anything that transpires. You have my word."
"Wow, that's...that's really big. Thanks."
"I'm merely doing my job." She took another sip of her tea, "Our role as professors is to guide these unruly children, and that means being harsh when necessary. The book I sent you will tell me more. I suggest you follow it to the letter if you find yourself floundering."
"Thanks, Glynda. I'll do that after classes end."
Glynda smiled as she watched him leave. Jaune was always a good egg. He wasn't the strongest or the smartest, but he was earnest and had an honest desire to help. It was why she'd offered him a job straight after graduation. It was just like how she was recruited. Perhaps she saw a sort of kindred spirit in him despite their differences. She hoped that the book on discipline would help him. Ms. Schnee was born with privilege and it would take knocking her down a peg to earn her respect.
Perhaps if she looked twice, she would've realized she'd sent the wrong discipline book...

Weiss walked down the halls away from Team RWBY's dorm room with her head held high. Things in the room were...tense. Ruby still refused to give up the mantle of leadership and it caused Yang to be her usual overprotective self and fight her sister's battles for her. Honestly, it was just more proof that she deserved the role of leader. She didn't hide behind Winter's skirt every time she faced pushback. No, she stood her ground and refused to bend just as any Schnee should.
She'd barely rounded the corner before almost running smack dab into someone, "Woah!" An all-too-familiar voice yelped. Weiss' eyes narrowed as she looked up at Professor Arc. Her lips curled in a slight smirk. She didn't dislike him personally, but it was clear he was unfit and she saw no reason to hold her tongue. A true professor would read up on the proper material rather than simply writing down the drivel from the first book he read.
"Ah, Ms. Schnee. Ahem." He coughed, scratching at his right cheek nervously. Her eyes narrowed. That was another reason she didn't respect him. He didn't have the firmness needed to do his job. None of the Professors here did, really. Professor Oobleck was scatterbrained and Professor Port was a blowhard. She lamented the fact that she'd enrolled just after Professor Goodwitch retired from teaching. She'd heard such good things about her classes.
"Yes, Mr. Arc?" Weiss raised a manicured brow.
"I was actually hoping to talk to you about something." He coughed once more, "It's about your behavior in class..."
"What about it?" she asked back in challenge. Was his ego so fragile that he couldn't take her (very justified) corrections?
"I don't think it's proper to act out so much."
"Act out? I was simply offering my advice. Is it wrong for a student to interact with their teacher constructively now?
"I think we both know that you weren't being constructive, Ms. Schnee." Professor Arc crossed his arms, "If you wish to offer 'constructive' criticism, then do it after class."
"Why wait? I believe the other students have a right to know if their lessons are...lacking in certain areas."
"Choosing a Valean book over an Atlesian one isn't lacking."
"It is if the research isn't up to snuff." She tilted her chin up at him, daring him to argue.
"...Know what, we're not having this conversation here." He sighed and brought a hand across his (messy, poorly styled) hair, "Come with me."
She raised both brows at the sudden assertiveness in his tone and followed him to an empty classroom. Watching him try to stumble and find a reason to scold her might be somewhat amusing. She stepped inside first and he closed the door behind her, "So what did you-"
That was as far as she got before she found both her arms suddenly restrained behind her. Weiss' eyes widened and she immediately started to struggle, but her arms refused to budge, "Hold still." Professor Arc said, voice distressingly calm as he pinned her to the ground with her face pressed against the cold floor, "We just gotta get this over with."
"Get what?!" Weiss shrieked, struggling and shaking, but his grip remained firm. Just barely, she remembered that his Semblance was to amplify his Aura. He was already stronger than her, but right now she might as well have been a child struggling against a goliath, "Let go of me! Let go, you brute!" Weiss tried to kick him away, but her legs felt like they were hitting a steel wall. He easily restrained both her arms with one hand while the other pulled something from behind him.
She barely caught the flash of steel before she felt cold cuffs around her wrists. Almost immediately, everything felt heavy. Her body felt like it was drowning and she lay limply on the floor, barely able to move. All she could do was watch helplessly as Professor Arc walked in front of her and...read his scroll? "Alright, what do I do next?" he mumbled, sounding rather unsure despite just assaulting and binding her, "First you make her helpless, and then..."
"Wh-What did you do to me?!" Weiss shrieked.
"Huh? Oh, Aura-dampening cuffs. It's what they put on Huntsmen who act out." He said it so casually, as if he hadn't just done what he did, "Could you gimme a sec? I gotta read this!"

"I wouldn't bother screaming. The walls are soundproof. This is the combat class. If it wasn't muffled, no one would hear the lessons." She kept screaming, hoping that he'd just been lying to try and keep her quiet. He sighed, "Look, we both know what has to happen here."

"I'm your teacher, and you've been disrespecting me." He held up a hand, "Let's not bother with the lies, Ms. Schnee. I may be new at this, but I'm not an idiot. The point is, you've been acting like a brat and you need to be...disciplined."
