Good idea. Biodiesel is easy to make, and would be a nice example of a transesterification reaction. I've done it before for fun, and I didn't even have a car that I could use it in. :)

We have always used rendered pork fat for making soap.

That looks like the road to biodiesel or maybe some useful homemade plastic ? (maybe vegetable oil based polyurethanes ) ("Polyols and Polyurethanes from Vegetable Oils and Their Derivatives")

True. Id gotten both 25M NaOH solution and solid on my hand for prolonged periods. The 25M (slightly warm) was on my face. small droplets, but were almost instantly like needles stabbing me. The solid stuff just made my hand slightly red and itchy.

NaOH will melt your skin, if you are patient enough. It slowly absorbs water and turns into concentrated solution and attacks the skin. It is not too painful either, so you might not wash it off in time, so some caution is advised.

Whaat? Not allowed to do it for fun? Myself and all of my friends canceled our monthly gaming and streaming subscriptions and just get together on weekends to dip limbs into hot lye solutions. I won't let you take that away from us!!1

Yeah I kind of knew my recipe was super basic and not the greatest. I am not a pro soap maker by any means. If I did it again, I'd definitely use more coconut oil I understand your more scientific point about superfatting but I dont personally think it's super important to add. The soap demolding issue is probably partly due to water, but it has to be mostly due to the additives. Only cinnamaldehyde and menthol were soft. All the others were hard. I was going to mention the soap rack, but I forgot, ha. Oops. I meant to add in at least a small annotation.

One more thing: the main reason for your soap being so soft and hard to de-mould the next day was using way too much water. I generally use a 40% or more solution of NaOH (up to 50-55%). As a warning though, the less water you use the faster you will go through the trace stages.

Yeah. I think coconut oil is almost all lauric acid (at least a large percentage)

I saw you had Lauric acid up as a fatty acid. Could you use pure lauric acid and potassium hydroxide?
