Religion in general is all about controlling people. How they think, how they act, what they do. When a Church comes about and builds it's authority on the idea they're divinely inspired, they have the word of God, and that word of God is perfect, then any fault, any mistake, any discrepancy is unacceptable, because it irreparably cracks that Churches control and authority. People start to wonder what else the Church is right about, if their interpretation of the scriptures is accurate, then if the scriptures themselves are accurate, and then finally if the God they're worshipping is accurate or exists at all. You've seen this in recent times with Homosexuality. Go back 20-30 years church was 100% opposed to it, it was sinful behavior and unacceptable. Now the Pope and Vatican are open minded about it because they've lost control of the narrative, and it's either conform to popular belief or fade into obscurity. A Church wants to always control the narrative. Not necessarily because they're evil, they might genuinely believe the narrative they're sharing and think it's best for people, but they always want to maintain that control. To be fair, you see this with politics as well. If you control the narrative you can guide how people think and react and get favorable results. Companies do the same thing with PR as well, so this isn't only a religion thing, just a life thing.

So not blood related but legally his father ;) and I presume that it is an etiquette thing to call him by his name (especially at school)

To answer some of your questions: Can you study astronomy? Yes, but you just CAN'T study heliocentrism (the model that puts the sun in the center of the universe) because that goes against what God says (in the Church's eyes). You can only study geocentrism (the model that puts Earth in the center of the Universe) Whats an inquisitor? An inquisitor was an official (usually with judicial or investigative functions) in an inquisition – an organization or program intended to eliminate heresy and other things contrary to the doctrine or teachings of the Catholic faith. Literally, an inquisitor is one who "searches out" or "inquires" (Latin for 'to seek'). Basically inquisitors are the ones looking for the heretics that are committing heresy, torture them for information about their heresy, and eliminate all the evidence of it. What's Potocki's relation to Rafal? Potocki is Rafal's adoptive father. Hence why they call each other family despite not being blood related. Potocki is also Rafal's teacher.
