Regarding your comment about Japanese houses - YES, privacy/noise is an issue! Not only are the walls thinner than European homes, bedrooms doors typically don't have locks on them (even the Western style doors), and children often sleep in the same room as their parents through most of primary school. And to top it off, most families of 4 share one bathroom/sink area. So all in all, it's pretty difficult to feel like you have much privacy in a family. It's one of the reasons why love hotels grew in popularity a few decades ago
