That said, it's a fantasy setting with magic in which gods and demons are confirmed as real. Some form of this being a possible motive is always on the table.
I guess it would also be on the table without those things, but let's not thing about how spooky scary the real world can be! Let us all escape to this magical land of fantasy within a magical land of fantasy, okay?

Indeed! Or possibly the mayor thought the adventurers were incompetent, and needed to be able to claim he was doing something to stop the theft now that word got out about it. Or possibly the mayor and the thief have different rituals in mind for the chicken. The thief might even be someone trying to prevent the ritual from happening!

It is, and yet, it seems like the mayor wasn't in on the plot. To be sure, he was still *part* of it, but his part was as one of the happless dupes. I mean, if the mayor *was* in on the plot, why would he hire adventurers? What, you say the chicken was actually sacrificed 35 minutes ago, and the quest was simply to draw some adventurers to their doom? Well, I guess that also would work.
