Okay, this is taken to an extreme in a situation in which it should be relatively easy, but seriously, try actually doing the "announce your tone and intent" in conversation.
(Not during any important conversations, please.)
It can be one HECK of a mental speed bump unless you keep it really simple. This is especially true if you try to do it for everything you say.
It's not important how I know this.

I tend to imagine written thoughts happening at the same tempo as corresponding speech. In this case, that would mean quite the delay for Grace's verbal response.
