There is a point to be made about how they just tacked on their own little subjective house rule to the definition as read.
Fortunately, there's a comic planned for after this one! HUZZAH!
I mean, yeesh, there better be. Susan went on for so long that I didn't have room for a punchline. I mean, do we really need to punch all the lines? No, we don't, but it's preferable in this sort of storyline, darn it!
I do think it's fair that there is an expectation that a fan likes something they're a fan of, though I can see nuance to that. In most cases, I think it will be a case in which someone is a fan of parts of a franchise, and not of others, but we're talking many, many possible scenarios here, including plenty I'm probably not even thinking of.
In any case, Susan does point out there's room for potential exceptions even if liking the thing you're enthusiastic about is most commonly expected.

@Dan Merget: That's a show I could only like ironically, but if the right person were to ask me to go to one, I'd certainly be enthusiastic about my ironic appreciation. ;)

I have the feeling that a lot of anime fans have to deal with a certain amount of that dichotomy. For some, it's that the stories are wonderful, while the art really is not, and even intentionally so. For others, it's that the art is really wonderful and so delightfully Japanese, but they don't like the stories. To be clear, I'm not talking about different anime works, but different anime fans, referring to the exact same works. And there are, of course, other perspectives still. Different people are different, and in more ways than we can imagine. Or, at least, more ways than I can imagine.

I'm a fan of a number of bad movies. For example, The Room, Robot Monster, Uninvited, anything by the Barbarian Brothers, and, of course the greatest bad movie of all time, Starcrash. I've watched all of those example films multiple times, and I always put a great deal of enthusiasm into making fun of them. Of course I doubt that the way I enjoy them is what the people who made them intended.

That might describe much of the fanbase of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. People show up for the midnight showings, many with props and costumes, to shout and mock the movie as it's playing.

This is a weirdly accurate portrayal of how I feel about anime. I'm definitely an anime fan, but... there's a lot I enthusiastically dislike about it too?

I'm enthusiastic about how much polish and technical skill was implemented well in making the Darkwood game as grindy, grody, and grungy as possible. It is downright depressing for players to slog through. Doesn't make me want to play it myself - but I like sending out gift copies as reference material ;) https://store.steampowered.com/app/274520/Darkwood/ I think I'm a fan of it - or more specifically a fan of the lore and of watching other people play parts of it.
