Considering we don't know how long they've been walking, nor how many have passed by without Rhoda noticing, it's hard to say if that's a lot or not. It could be that there's a whole flock of them just off panel behind them that Rhoda completely missed. And that's just for starters. Also, we didn't see them leave the tavern, so they could've just popped out the back while Susan was heading for the front, and she's just barely far enough for the back of the tavern to be off-panel in the first panel. Her words *sound* like they've travelled a while, but I think I've played an RPG in which the player has a companion that comments on how huge the (quite small for anything but a video game) city is after you're in the city with them for about 5 minutes. That's just long enough that someone doing their best to cover the distance can get all the way across to the other side. Or long enough for me to get distracted right by the entrance, such that the companion only took a few steps inside and then stopped and stood there for five minutes.
