I recall in college coming across the chemical formula for how human bodies process alcohol. If I recall correctly, it uses seven water molecules for every alcohol molecule. I'm pretty sure most of what makes you pee a lot when you drink beer is other stuff in the beer. The one time I experimented with alcohol, I drank most of a fifth of whiskey, and I didn't really have to go to the bathroom a lot. I've not performed a similar experiment with beer because by the time I found a beer I could actually drink, I had already learned that I can drink roughly a tenth of whiskey over the course of a couple hours and barely feel it. That translates to more beer than I want to buy - especially since even the beer I can drink isn't really something I'd consider palatable.

Actually, it's an myth that soda is a diuretic. It's just less hydrating than drinking the same amount of water.

Probably for the same reason, but I'm no pharmacologist.

Stephen Gilberg

Caffeinated drinks are bad for hydration as well.

IIRC what's actually happening is your body going on high alert and trying to flush the toxic substance out of your system as fast as possible. Because yeah, ethanol is actually toxic - it just has an exceptionally high LD50 compared to substances we usually think of as toxic.

Having looked up the SCIENCE: Ethanol tells your kidneys to make more pee, which uses up more water than usual, which is why you end up dehydrated after drinking booze. As well as needing to pee a lot.

Aaron Gullison

Usually it's water, then beer.
