Patreon Declined Payment Issue

Yep, I got hit as well. From what I've dug up, on about July 26th Patreon switched their payment processor from in the USA to one in the UK. And they told *noone* before doing this. This cause over 30% of the Patreon user-base to have declined payments due to the sudden source of an international charges. And a significant chunk of those declines were also flagged as fraudulent, freezing credit cards and bank accounts for those innocent Patreon users that had no idea what was going on. That is, until a full week later when Patreon cited "issues [...] caused by external sources" and didn't entirely fess up that they did this to us themselves. It took me over a week to get my banking all sorted out, and all the rest of my bills at the end of the month suffered late fees, due to a frozen credit card. Thanks Patreon :(

I actually got a call from my bank asking if my payment to Patreon was a valid payment. I guess something in their system made a lot of banks suspect the monthly payments were fraudulent?

Because they didn’t goof, they switched processors because the American ones are trying to block them from the market. Patreon reduces their fees, so they’d prefer you use their version. (PayPal for instance)

I guess that would be the "caused by... our efforts to create a stable and global platform". i.e. we goofed and it blew up. Why can't they just *say* they fiddled with their payment processor and that may cause issues?

I don't think Patreon is based in the U.K. They originally incorporated in California, USA and the terms of service still specify that as the venue for legal purposes. My understanding is that they switched to a different payment processing service and that's what's located in the U.K.

I'd actually gotten a suspicious activity alert from my credit card over Patreon midway through the month over a $0 dollar charge.

I got a call from Citibank today (company for the credit card I use with Patreon) asking if I made a payment to a "marketing company in the U.K." I almost declined the charge. The person on the phone kept saying Pay-reen as the company name. She finally spelled it and I realized it was Patreon. I did not know Patreon was based in the U.K. so that threw me off initially. I got it worked out and the charge was approved.

Fortunately I had no such issue. I was a bit worried regarding this months payment as I had to replace my debit card mid way through last month but as of yesterday that payment went through so no problem.

The reason the credit card processor gave me was that the charge was from a foreign (non- US) bank (which my CU automatically blocks)
