Given that Rhoda is showing a fantastic degree of control of her power here, it seems more than plausible she can specify where within its volume a shrunken object should end up. And with Catalina's center of mass suddenly going up by a couple feet, I can buy there's some inertia lofting her higher so Rhoda can make the grab. (Being able to control where Catalina ends up has some other fun uses, too. Like Rhoda taking Catalina's hand, then shrinking her so that she's now in Rhoda's palm...)

an instant-shrink could have Catalina contract in all directions and end up at her center of mass before gravity takes over. A slower shrink leaves her seated in the booth.

Given that she didn't have time to fall, the grab must have been very fast; fractions of a second fast. That is impressive motor control to grab that quickly, without grabbing hard enough to cause Catalina pain.
