Yeah got that part, the Byakuya scene fianlly makes sense! I was confused in whether they actually were a noble family in the past or just an important one, thanks for the clarification!!

Kaien, Ganju and Kukaku are from the Shiba clan. The Shiba clan was once one of the great noble families before they fell from grace. When Byakuya heard Ganju was from the Shiba clan in episode 41, he attacked him seriously.
