(Not to say that I necessarily want all operatic all the time OR all literal all the time, I think the coolest thing about Star Wars is probably that it keeps a tension between those, even if writers frequently topple over on that tightrope)

To me the most bizarre compromise is the L3 story, yeah, that story takes the society of Star Wars more literally than most of the movies do (bringing it closer to Clone Wars's usually quite literal-minded lore) yet doesn't follow through on what that indicates about all these droid-controlling characters. The less literal and more operatic/gestural the movies are (more of an Empire Strikes Back or Last Jedi mode than Clone Wars), the more I accept Star Wars eliding the social position of droids

Right, but IMO it says something that the writers DO engage with it at all. The other characters treating it as annoying reads to me like a compromise.

But even then it was mostly played for laughs. The movie and all the characters in it are constantly treating L3's ideology as a joke, because as soon as anyone takes it seriously, we have to reckon with the fact that every star wars character is a slave owner.

Honestly surprised L3 still hasn’t come up in the ongoing conversation on droid free will; like, I get it, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a film that’s extremely easy to not mention in conversation, let alone remember exists, but still, she’s a droid that did the thing and had free will, was an equal business partner with Lando, advocated for droid rights, and led a local droid uprising in canon, and not just like, in a this-got-sorta-mentioned-in-a-panel-of-a-dr-aphra-spinoff-comic canon, but like, direct film canon.

1. I full cackled on the airplane while listening to the discussion of Mon Mothma and Aunt Beru as assassins. 2. Re: droids - there's a (legends?) instance of a Jedi Droid in Star Wars Tales issue 1 or 2 with Skippy the Jedi Droid which is just the most charming of tales about an R2 unit with midichlorians in his oil. Also I feel like the need for restraining bolts really heavily implies that droids have free will that needs to be suppressed. That on top of the memory wipe thing really supports the humanity of droids. A supporting case is Dr Aphra where Triple Zero basically puts Aphra in a sitch where she is forced to remove the blocks on his free will that she had previously put in place. Though, I think the ultimate example of a force sensitive machine is of course, dear old dad - Darth Vader who's more machine than man as people love to point out to him from time to time
