I use multiply, but only for shading that's overlaying the existed painted area (like the overlaying shadow from the tree leaves in this image) Normally I just use manual painting method on normal layers. It's not a stupid question tho don't worry. I've seen some great artists that use only multiply layers too. Just do what ever you feel like it.
