Tectone, look up the International Phonetic Alphabet. It's a legend or chart consisting of all phonemes in every language, with a direct 1-1 phoneme-grapheme transcription. Even has empty spaces for sounds which anatomically can be produced by human vocalization, but aren't present in any known tongue. Best way to be able to transcribe sounds at speed, as per words you're unfamiliar with or which have dumb spellings, like most French words.
