Nothing really worth mentioning at the moment.

QT doesn't have production ready mature C# support. Avalonia or WPF are the only realistic choices for this project.

shakeyourbunny

If anything that proves both Avalonia and WPF are a dead end, is there a consideration to port Playnite to QT?

shakeyourbunny

Are there some updates on the current state of affairs regarding P11?

Josef Nemec

Yeah it's ironic because I originally wasn't fan of WPF either back when it released and a lot of reasons why I'm not a fan of Avalonia are quite similar. Like for example WPF originally couldn't do text rendering properly, always having weird artifacts and looking blurry. Avalonia has similar issues these days, feels like text rendering is getting broken in some way with every release (for example one of the recent betas broke clear-type). Also state of WPF dev tooling was pretty bad originally. Now these days WPF still feels like the best UI framework Microsoft ever made. UWP, WinUI and MAUI all feel like step backwards in many ways. People have been crying for multiplatform WPF 2.0 but MS is just not interested for some reason.

Oh also wanted to add, your frustrations about Avalonia made me laugh a little bit cause that’s how I felt about WPF ~15 years ago. 😂 Glad to hear WPF has gotten better, I was not sure it ever would! But hey, good sign I guess that there’s hope for Avalonia one day.

Jason Ericson

I know this is super late but I just want to encourage you, Playnite is one of my favorite gaming-related tools *ever*, and you’re killing it. Personally, while I completely understand your thinking about WPF vs Avalonia (it’s extremely important for a developer to think about quality of life!) I really hope you stick with it - I know that I’ll be one of, I’m sure, many who is ready to pitch in on linux support once Playnite is built on a more cross-platform base. 🙂

Thanks for the info, nice update, hope this makes supporting other platforms easier if you want to down the line :)

Thanks for the update🤗 I think it's better to make a switch earlier since it's inevitable. Also, I don't think that it make sense to backport features to P10 when the development of P11 is already started and we are patiently wait any new of it :) It's better to focus all the affords on P11 at this point. The thing worth mentioning that Fullscreen mode is what separates the Playnite from the rest of the similar software because it's a must have for the handhelds which are on the rise right now.

Thanks for sharing the various trials and considerations you're making while developing P11. It's unfortunate you can't backport features to P10, but totally makes sense why you wouldn't want to put the time necessary into it. If/when Playnite gets a Linux port, I'll be moving my system to Linux as well. This is definitely a must-have software for me. As far as Avalonia goes, sucks to hear the tooling just isn't there yet. The apps I've seen switch to Avalonia result in a much cleaner and faster experience, so I do really hope that it's feasible for P11. If not though, I'll just have to look forward to when it *does* become feasible.

Yes, I cannot wait for that. Currently, my installation runs in a KVM box and I tried the whole day to devise a way to remotely execute (on the linux host) a game from within Playnite, but to no avail.

Kyle

Excited to read about progress that might get Playnite closer to a linux version. Playnite is likely to be the frontend of choice for the Steam Deck.

shakeyourbunny

Really thank you for the detailed situation report you made after you pointed me out in Discord for that. I was pondering a while to give myself a push to support you financially, so I'm here. I really do hope that you can sort out the described problems and also will have fun developing Playnite further.

Magnus

wishing you luck figuring out the best solution to these problems. it sounds frustrating. for my part, P10 already suits my needs, so take the time you need to avoid burning out.

Matt

You'll continue getting my monthly sub. You've earned my trust. Take your time to do it right.

Josef Nemec

I have seen that. I don't consider it to be usable for Playnite because it's tied to "system's" web view, which means non-uniform functionality across platforms. I much rather prefer solutions where you can ship web view with your app and it works the same everywhere no matter in what state the system is.

Alex

Have you take a look at MicroSugarDeveloperOrg/Avalonia.WebView on github? it uses WebViews (WebView2) on Windows and also supports Linux. I do have fun with Avalonia and have done ports from WPF to it in the past. I will updated the GameJolt plugin to support P11 avalonia as soon as this is possible to do.

Thank you for the update. Don't get too disheartened with the stop/start development, I know this is easier said than done, but the number one passion killer is hitting brick wall after brick wall. Unfortunately this seems to be the norm in the development world, libraries solve one problem but introduce ten more cool problems for you to solve.

RabidLime

you have all of our thanks and gratitude for being so diligent and keeping us updated. sending you good vibes and ✊s.
