[Emissary] Chapter 2 - First Contact

That's when Harry became Death’s Champion. That being said, the current DC World is his 7th lifetime (and the 5th since he bound himself to Death).

Chapter 2 - First Contact
After living for so long, Harry couldn’t imagine becoming a child again and having to pretend he was a clueless and innocent little boy whose archenemy would be a wealthy man’s spoiled brat of a son. Therefore, one of the first things that he asked from Death after becoming their emissary was not to be reincarnated into the body of a newborn or that of another child version of himself in his next world. He was an adult. He wasn’t going to do the whole school and puberty thing again.
Death granted him that request. Making use of the Veil from the Department of Mysteries or other places with a strong connection to the concept of death, they transported Harry to various worlds with his body and memories intact. Having reached the prime age of his body, Harry’s appearance remained that of a man in his late twenties or early thirties.
Seeing as it was far from being the first time he was transported to a new world, he had even developed a sort of routine on how to get settled in.
Step 1: Find a big city.
Step 2: Go to an ill-famed district and secretly raid a police station’s files about the local gang leaders and crime lords.
Step 3: Kill the scumbags.
Step 4: Profit.
And that’s how Jyotish Chopra, a member of the Tamil Snake Gang, found himself at the other end of a wand, his eyes glazed over, and confessing every crime he had committed in the past three years.
One short trip to a nearby ATM later, Harry found himself in possession of 500 British Pounds, courtesy of Mr Chopra’s generosity. The gangster’s bank account had a sum of six digits but, unfortunately, British ATMs had a limit for the amount of cash that could be withdrawn daily.
“Thanks for the money. I’ll put them to good use,” Harry said, patting him on the back as if he were an old friend. “Now, where were we? Ah, right, you were telling me how you stabbed your ex-girlfriend to death.”
He shook his head and let out a sigh. “It’s time for you to go home now. When you get there, find the sharpest knife you own and kill yourself.”

Sitting in front of a vanity mirror, a black-haired woman smiled as she put on cleanser on her face to remove her makeup. She was still riding the high from the show she had put on earlier that evening.
An expression of surprise marred her face when she noticed the large silhouette behind her in the mirror.
“Bruce? How unexpected. I haven’t seen you in so long. What brings you here?” she asked, smiling as she turned to face the bat-costumed hero.
“Impressive performance you put on tonight,” Batman said.
“You want me to believe you sat throughout the whole show?”
The teasing tone of her voice and the way she rested her chin on the back of her hand let him know that she didn’t buy it in the least.
“I did catch your finale, your real magic trick at the end,” Batman said, allowing himself a smile.
Most people had never seen him show that kind of expression, but the two of them had a special relationship. They grew up together, they were childhood friends.
That being said, Batman wasn’t the type to beat around the bush so he cut the chase:
“I need your help.”
She blew out a loud sigh.
“You only come to me when you need something from me.”
“This is important, Zatanna.”
“Fine, fine. There’s always something important. Never any time for saying hello to your probably only friend in the whole world.”
But, in spite of her grumbling, she followed him to his batmobile.

“I thought you stopped using this place,” Zatanna said as she looked at the familiar cave underneath Bruce Wayne’s mansion. At his pointed look, she defended herself: “What, with you being 24/7 at the Watchtower to coordinate the Justice League, you’d need to have a body double to be in two places at once.”
“I’m not there as often as you think. J’onn is the one who coordinates the league most of the time.”
Taking a seat in front of the supercomputer, Batman stopped joking with her and said:
“Enough about me. I wanted to show you this.”
A video started playing on the large screen. The shaking of the camera and the loud voices of the people around suggested that the one who recorded the clip was an amateur.
“Three days ago, a group of tourists at Stonehenge, in the UK, witnessed a supernatural phenomenon and a creature that looked like a grim reaper flying out of it.”
“Sounds to me like someone pulled a prank on them,” Zatanna said unimpressed. She worked in the field after all; tricking people and making them believe it was magic was what she did for a living.
“I hope you keep the same energy after you finish watching,” Batman said.
A few seconds after he said those words, a strange mist suddenly shrouded the prehistoric monument. The sunny sky became covered by a curtain of dark clouds, and a layer of ice appeared on the surface of the large stones.
Moments later, the group of tourists broke into screams of terror as a black, shadowy phantom flew out of Stonehenge.
“...Okay, that definitely doesn’t look like a prank,” Zatanna admitted.
“And that’s not all,” Batman added as he started typing quickly on the keyboard, bringing up several portrait photos of various people. “Two nights ago, 15 people committed suicide. Last night, another 20. So, first, a creature that looks like a Grim Reaper comes out and then people start committing suicide. That’s not normal no matter how I look at it.”
Zatanna lost her easygoing attitude at the sound of that.
“Approximately 600 people commit suicide in London every year. Not a small number, of course, but it’s far from enough to warrant 35 people killing themselves in two nights. My gut feeling is telling me that whoever came out of Stonehenge three days ago has something to do with their deaths.”
“So it’s a serial killer… What’s their pattern?” Zatanna asked.
“I don’t know,” Batman said.
Not missing Zatanna’s look of disbelief, he continued:
“I thought at first that he had a sort of vendetta against gangsters and other criminals, but there are quite a few among his victims who don’t have a record. William Clive here, for example, was a regular blue-collar worker in his mid-forties who worked 50 hours a week to provide for his wife and three children. The worst thing he’d ever done was get a speeding ticket. Or Becky Smith; she was a young woman who worked as a nurse at St. George’s Hospital to pay her student loan. No crime record whatsoever.”
“If there is a pattern among his victims, I can’t see it. But there is also the chance that that creature is killing people randomly,” Batman concluded. Although their deaths were ruled by the forensics as suicide, he knew better than to believe that.
Turning around in his chair, he looked up at Zatanna and asked.
“So what can you tell me about it? Do you know anything?”
He may have been renowned amongst his fellow Justice League teammates as a hell of a detective, but even Batman wasn’t omniscient. When it came to matters of the occult, he was often at a loss and had to ask for other people’s help.
“I can’t tell just by watching a video. I need to be there, on the site, and feel the nature of the magic power it left behind,” Zatanna said. “But, by the looks of it, it seems like we might need Doctor Fate or John Constantine’s help on this one.”
“I thought so too, but Doctor Fate recently retired; he won’t put on the Helmet again. I couldn’t find a trace of Constantine. You’re the only magician I can trust.”
“That sounds like Constantine, alright. As the saying goes, only a sorcerer can find another sorcerer. John and I have history… I’ll find him within the week. But in the meantime, I’d like to go to Stonehenge myself and get a feel of the place.”

The tall ceiling, the wide space, the numerous people hurrying about, and more than 10 platforms packed with commuters waiting for their train to arrive.
‘This world’s King’s Cross is just as busy as in the other ones,’ Harry thought as he walked towards the space between the 3rd and the 4th platforms.
Once there, he preemptively cast a spell to make the Muggles ignore him before touching the wall that served as a gateway to the ¾ platform.
“So this is a dud too?”
The wall didn’t give way. It reminded him of the House Elf Dobby, who had once spelt the gateway shut as a means to stop him from attending Hogwarts.
‘Revelio.’
Unlike that time when he was a child, now he had the means to deal with this unforeseen situation. But casting the Revelio Charm didn’t yield any results.
Sharpening his senses, Harry focused on feeling any traces of magic around the platform, but there wasn’t even a drop of it. Nothing whatsoever. The King’s Cross train station was completely mundane.
‘What’s going on?’ he asked himself.
The first day after he arrived in this world, with a few uses of the Confundus Charm, Harry obtained an ID card from the Police and even found a place to rent, somewhere in the suburbs of London. After robbing nearly 40 criminals and ordering them to commit suicide, his monetary problem was taken care of as well, so the next thing to do on his list was to get in contact with the Wizarding World.
At first, he tried to find the Leaky Cauldron, but it was fruitless because he couldn’t see the small pub anywhere. Then he tried to reach the Ministry of Magic through the telephone cab and toilet entrances, but that proved to be a waste of time as well. Now, he was at the King’s Cross but this place appeared to be devoid of magic as well.
‘Then I guess I have no other choice.’
A loud crack startled dozens of people as Harry Disapparated. In the next moment, he Apparated in the air above the city, flying.
Moving his wand in a circle above his head, an enormous wave of fire was suddenly conjured.
‘If I can’t find the Wizarding World, I’ll just make them find me.’
With how strict the Ministry of Magic was about keeping the Statute of Secrecy, what would their reaction be if some madman decided to summon a huge firestorm in the skies above London for 10 million Muggles to see?
By the time Harry made three circles with the movement of his wand, the wave of fire he conjured had transformed into an immense vortex of flames visible from every corner of the large metropolis.
He was high enough above the city for nobody to see him, so they wouldn’t be able to link it up to him.
‘The Muggles won’t know it was a fellow human who made that fire. They can only explain it as a bomb exploding. But the Ministry of Magic will be turned upside down.’

One minute… two minutes… five minutes passed, yet nobody came. Nobody magical.
‘What the hell is going on?’
For all its faults, if there was one thing the Ministry of Magic never slacked on, it was maintaining the Statute of Secrecy. Obliviators were always ready to Apparate at the scene instantly and do damage control.
An unsettling thought came to his mind.
‘Could it be that this world doesn’t have a Ministry of Magic?’
An even more disturbing thought popped up right after.
‘...What if there is no Wizarding World at all?’
It was while he was having those thoughts that a futuristic spaceship appeared in the skies above London, and two silhouettes flew out of it through its opened hatch.
Hidden in plain sight among the huge crowd of people flooding central London’s streets as they watched the flaming sky above, Harry looked at the newcomers with an expression of surprise on his face.
The two were a tall and muscular man wearing a strange grey metallic suit that looked like a second skin, and a blonde woman dressed in a white leotard suit and wearing a red cape. They were both flying.
“Oh! It’s the Justice League!”
“Captain Atom!”
“Power Girl! I love you!”
“Everything is going to be fine now that they are here.”
Harry’s curiosity only grew at the sound of what everyone around him was saying.
‘Are they some sort of celebrities?’ he thought. ‘And what is this Justice League? I haven’t heard of them in any of my previous lives. More importantly, how are they flying?’
A pulse of magic came out of him like a sphere which began to enlarge until the point where it engulfed everything around him, washing over the the two flying people above as well. It was a large-scale Revelio Charm.
‘How are they doing it? I can’t sense any magic from them or anywhere in the vicinity. I don’t see them using any Muggle devices to fly either.’
His curiosity at an all-time high now, Harry decided to get closer to them and eavesdrop on their conversation.
Casting a powerful Disillusionment Charm on himself, he became completely invisible and flew up.

“Whoever conjured this vortex of fire seems to have run away before we arrived. Probably hiding among the large number of people below,” Harry heard the man say.
“Good luck trying to find them. It’d be like searching for a needle in a haystack,” the blonde woman replied.
“Interesting comparison.”
The straight tone of his voice would have fooled most people, but the woman appeared to be close enough to him to realize that he was teasing her.
“I lived at a farm in Kansas for a few months, Captain,” she laughed. “But I can’t help wondering why they lured us here.”
Looking around her, the blonde woman said loudly: “Hey, you got our attention, don’t be shy now.”
“You notice anything around?” the man asked.
“Nothing comes up on my X-ray vision, but my superhearing picked up the sound of another person’s breathing and their heartbeat. Someone is close to us now, watching us,” she replied to him before speaking loudly again to her surroundings: “We came all the way from Paris, you know? You could at least come out and say hi after all the trouble you put us through.”
“There’s no way that is going to work. No one would-” the man began to say, only for him to stop talking when the air shimmered and a man appeared out of nowhere in front of them: he was of average height, and he had shoulder-length smooth blonde hair, black eyes, and tan skin.

‘They don’t seem particularly confused about the existence of this fire spell. That means that even if they’re not magical themselves, they’ve probably come in contact with wizards and witches before,’ Harry thought when he heard them talk lightly and even joking around with each other.
When the woman said that she could hear his heartbeats and the sound of his breathing, Harry quickly cast a Silencing Charm on himself. Nevertheless, it was a little too late.
‘She wasn’t bluffing,’ he realised when he saw that she was looking straight in his direction, despite that she couldn’t see through his invisibility.
Granted, now that he had cast a Silencing Charm, she had no way of knowing where he was anymore. Nothing stopped him from Disapparating if he wanted to either. But his purpose was to find the Wizarding World and get information; that’s why he made such a scene. So he dropped his Disillusionment Charm and made himself visible to them. He had Transfigured himself to look like a different person anyway.

“Hello,” Harry said in greeting.
The man glanced at the woman with a blank look on his face. “...They really came out.”
She snickered at her partner’s disbelief before turning her attention to Harry.
“Hi there. I don’t suppose you can cancel this fire first? It’s scaring the people below.”
“No problem,” Harry said. He waved his hand at the large vortex of fire, vanishing it with a thought.
The man and the woman stared at him silently, as if he had grown two heads. He didn’t need his expertise in Legilimency to read their mind because their thoughts were written on their faces.
“Something the matter?” Harry asked when their staring was starting to get awkward.
“Ah, sorry. We’re just not used to people listening to reason. We usually have to punch their teeth out before they become obedient,” she said.
They hadn’t expected him to actually listen to her words and put out the fire. That wasn’t how supervillains usually behaved.
“I don’t want to cause any more trouble than necessary. I just need some information.”
“Then we should take this somewhere else. Follow us,” the man said, pointing with his thumb at the floating spaceship behind them.

Having followed them into the spaceship, the man piloted the ship away from the large city, stopping a few tens of kilometres away, in the bare plains to the west of London, the Salisbury Plain.
“Taking me away from the city in case a fight breaks out?” Harry asked in mild amusement.
“Standard protocol,” the man replied. “Civilians’ safety is always the number one priority.”
“You don’t look like an unhinged criminal to me, but I’ve been wrong before. Better safe than sorry,” the woman also said.
Disembarking, Harry was followed by the two costumed people outside the spaceship.
“First of all, who are you?” the man asked.
“...It’s good manners to introduce yourself before asking for other people’s names.”
The two looked at each other for a moment.
“You mean to say you don’t know who we are?” the woman asked as if she didn’t believe a word he said.
“I suppose the two of you are famous? Sorry, I’m not from around.”
“She is Power Girl. I am Captain Atom. The two of us are members of the Justice League Europe, an organisation tasked by the United Nations with maintaining safety and peace in the European Union. Now it’s your turn,” the man said curtly.
“UN didn’t give us any tasks. They just gave us the green light to operate legally,” Power Girl corrected him with a roll of her eyes. Turning her attention to Harry then, she said: “Regardless, your accent tells me you were born and raised in London. I may not be from the UK myself but I know that much.”
“You can call me Emissary,” Harry replied, following their example of not saying his real name. “My parents were British, yes, but I grew up somewhere else. You could say I’ve been living under a rock until recently, so I don’t know much about the outside world.”
Technically, it wasn’t a lie. He came from a different world.
“Let’s say that we believe you; why did you summon that vortex of fire above London?” Captain Atom asked.
“I’m a wizard. I’m looking for the Wizarding World. I’ve been told it was supposed to be in London, but I couldn’t find it.”
Having paid attention to the sound of his heartbeat to see if he was lying, Power Girl burst into laughter when she realised that he appeared to be sincere. The tone of his voice suggested that as well.
“Sorry, sorry!” she said through giggles when she saw Captain Atom’s annoyed look directed at her and Harry’s blank expression at her reaction. “I can’t tell whether you’re a damn good liar or a loon.”
“And now you’re being rude,” Harry said calmly.
“Oh, come on! What person normal in the head goes searching for Wonderland in freaking London of all places?” she asked, and crossed her arms under her breasts, seemingly unintentionally bringing his attention to how well-endowed she was.
“So you don’t know anything about the Wizarding World…” Harry sighed. “I guess there’s no point in wasting your time anymore. I’ll be on my way. Have a good one.”
Saying those words, he took to the air and slowly flew away. But Power Girl suddenly sped in front of him and blocked his way.
“I’m afraid we can’t let you go just like that.”
“Why?”
“What do you mean why?” she said incredulously. “You summoned a tornado of fire above London and then refused to tell us your name too. You’re suspicious as hell. We need to verify your real identity and ascertain that you aren’t a threat. You have nothing to be afraid of as long as you’re innocent.”
“Don’t make this harder than it has to be, son,” Captain Atom also flew behind him and said.
He let out another sigh at Captain Atom calling him ‘son’. He was old enough to be the grandfather of Captain Atom’s grandfather. But it’s exactly because he was so old that he didn’t feel like getting into a verbal spat with them.
‘It makes sense they’re just trying to do their job, but I can’t waste my time on them, and I’d rather not get interrogated by the police now,’ Harry thought.
A loud crack startled both Power Girl and Captain Atom as he Disapparated, vanishing from their eyes.
“Did he… did he just teleport away?” Power Girl asked, wide-eyed from surprise. “Ah, what a headache!”

Two weeks passed since Harry’s first contact with the two members of Justice League Europe.
‘You really screwed me over this time, Death,’ he thought as he watched a live broadcast on his TV.
He had come to learn that there was no Wizarding World on this Earth. However, things weren’t any less chaotic. The chaos that Dark Lords used to create in both the mundane and magical society was replaced in this world by supervillains, criminals with superhuman abilities ranging from flying to controlling the elements, super strength and durability, and so on.
Currently, he was watching the Justice League of America slug it out on live television with a gang of criminals calling themselves the Injustice Gang. Created, funded, and led by an American billionaire turned criminal, the group of supervillains more than held their own against the caped heroes.
Watching them smash each other through concrete walls and come out unharmed, lifting cars and throwing them away with pure raw strength, and throwing all sorts of energy attacks, Harry couldn’t hold in his annoyance.
“I knew it. I just knew you wouldn’t make my last time easy!”
If someone had heard him then they would think he was talking to himself. But he was talking to Death.
It wasn’t the first time Harry ended up in a world that was vastly different from the Earth he grew up in.
“Looks like every time my service is about to end, you’re sending me to a world where you’re certain I’ll die so my slave contract gets extended.”
But Death didn’t say anything in response to his accusations. They didn’t even reveal themselves in the open, ignoring his complaints.
“And don’t get me started about Darkseid!” Harry continued, his voice almost resembling a yell now. “How the hell am I supposed to deal with that?! You sent me here to kill a fucking god, for god’s sake! A damned god, with an army of superpowered creatures, living on a different planet altogether, in an entirely different galaxy! Fuck!”
That information was readily available on the internet. He had searched up the name ‘Darkseid’ without expecting much, but he got a lot more information than he had thought due to Darkseid’s failed invasion of Earth a few years ago, an invasion which failed only thanks to another alien army belonging to a place called “New Genesis”.
Leaving aside the fact that Darkseid was a god and that he had an army of millions, Harry didn’t even know how he was supposed to get to Apokolips, where Darkseid lived. He had never even been to the moon, to say nothing about going to another planet, much less another galaxy.
He had killed Voldemort several times already, and the Flamels, an immortal wizard called Zeref, battled giant demons and intelligent dragons, he even defeated an evil duo made of Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but none of those achievements had prepared him for his current task. It was on a completely different scale.
It was unlike Harry to get so agitated because he had long since learned to control his emotions. But even Occlumency had its limits. In the end, he was a living being, not a machine. This was his seventh life already. He had been ecstatic at the thought that it was going to be the last.
Due to his contract with Death, he would be unable to stay dead until he finished his task. But the penalty for every time he resurrected would be to spend one more lifetime in Death’s service.
It was obvious why Death sent him to such a dangerous world and gave him a seemingly impossible task because they had already done that once before when he was sent to the world of Earthland to kill the Immortal Mage, Zeref. Clearly, Death was hoping that Harry would die again in the process of completing his mission.
“It’s almost funny how, of all things, it’s Death who is keeping me chained to life.”
He turned off the TV and let his head fall on the backrest of the couch. He lost track of time as he became absorbed in all sorts of thoughts.
‘I better go get some sleep,’ he thought.
It was night in the UK, and he had a busy day ahead of him tomorrow.
‘I have to get in contact with Justice League Europe and apply for membership somehow.’
Although he had achieved many great things in his previous lifetimes, Harry wasn’t blinded by overconfidence. Death’s mission this time was almost impossible if he were to stay aloof and try to do it alone. He needed help, and not just their strength but their technology as well. He had no way of reaching Apokolips all by himself.
‘Then there’s also the matter of convincing them to go to Apokolips…’
Just thinking about it was giving him a headache. With a sigh, he cleared his thoughts and stopped thinking about it. Getting into his bed, he closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep.
An extremely loud crash rang in the distance. It sounded like a truck crashing into a house. He waved his hand in annoyance towards the walls and the window of his bedroom, casting a Silencing Charm.
The noise coming from outside was silenced…but his spell couldn’t do anything about the tremors shaking his home from its foundations. Furthermore, those tremors were getting stronger.
“Bloody hell, bloody Death, bloody metahumans, fuck!”
Harry started living in this world’s London two weeks ago. Every two or three days, some metahuman had to act up and cause a disturbance.
“I’m moving away from this damn city, I swear to god. I’m going to build a house on a god-forsaken island in the Pacific.”
He was an old man. He craved peace and quiet. But he couldn’t even sleep undisturbed despite that he was living in the suburbs, away from the tumult of the city.
His house suddenly shook so badly that some paint fell from the ceiling. The fight between the two metahumans must’ve moved closer to his home because his house was directly attacked too. If it hadn’t been for the protective spells he had cast beforehand out of habit as a precaution, he might have been buried under his collapsed house by now.
A deep feeling of annoyance boiling inside of him, Harry grabbed the Elder Wand from the nightstand and got out of bed. There was murder in his eyes. He didn’t care who was fighting outside, he was going to give them all a piece of his mind.
But he barely made two steps away from the bed when the wall of his bedroom exploded inward and a hail of debris smashed into him like bullets.
“What-, what the fuck?!!”
Even though he protected himself in time with a Shielding Charm, he was still startled that they actually destroyed his house. Just what kind of impact was needed for them to overwhelm the Unbreakable Spell that he cast on his home?
‘Ventus.’
A gale of wind burst from his wand and dispersed the clouds of dust that had filled his bedroom. At the same time, a bulb of light appeared in his other hand, illuminating the darkness.
Under the pale light of his Lumos spell, a massive body appeared to be lying among the destroyed bits of his bedroom wall. It was so large and muscular that Harry might have confused him for a troll if he hadn’t remembered that he was currently in London, in a world without the Wizarding World.
“Had enough or do you want more?”
That oddly familiar voice made Harry turn his attention to the newcomer. Short blonde hair, a skimpy outfit consisting of a white leotard with a generous boob window, and a red cape on her back… she was certainly a figure hard to forget.
Noticing that he was awake, the young woman smiled sheepishly.
“Ah, sorry for the mess. Worry not, sir, the Justice League will cover all the expenses for fixing your place,” Power Girl began to say when Harry started pinching the bridge of his nose.
Thinking about it rationally, he knew that the Police and the Heroes didn’t get to choose when and where the criminals attacked, but on an emotional level, he was fuming. Why did it have to be his home?!
Power Girl was just about to ask Harry about the light floating in the air and the wand in his hand when the muscular giant got up from the rubble and screamed in anger.
“I’ll kill you! I’ll snap your frail body like a twig!” he roared and defied gravity as he jumped at Power Girl, tackling her and smashing her into another house, breaking through its roof, and demolishing two of its walls too.
The cries of the people stuck underneath the debris brought Harry to a standstill. Stepping outside, he saw that it wasn’t only his house. At least 6 or 7 houses in the vicinity had been demolished by the metahumans’ brawl.
His body turned into that of a shadowy wraith as he flew at the two metahumans punching each other amidst the collapsed walls of the house, and, grabbing them by their shoulders when they didn’t expect it, he Disapparated.
In the next moment, Power Girl and Big Sir found themselves in the middle of nowhere, the city nowhere in sight. Too baffled by the sudden change of scenery, they stopped punching each other to make sense of their situation. They were on a plain as wide as their eyes could see in the moonlight.
Power Girl flew up in an attempt to get a bird's-eye view of the surroundings to determine her location, but the large villain tackled her again and slammed her down again.
“Get off me, you ugly brute!” she snapped at him in annoyance and socked him in the jaw so hard that it twisted his head to the side.
‘Oh, no, not again!’ she prayed in her mind.
She had put so much strength in that punch that it should’ve sent Big Sir flying, not just twisting his head to the side. Her powers were acting wonky again.
A feeling of urgency washing over her, Power Girl pushed the giant off her with both legs and kicked him three times in the chin for good measure too before flying away, intent on putting some distance between them until her symptoms calmed down. However, she only got to fly for 30 metres before her flying ability suddenly disappeared.
“Goddamnit!” she cried out as she fell and crashed painfully on the ground.
