Cystic Fibrosis is no longer the early death sentence it was. A new medication has increased life spans so much kids with Cystic Fibrosis no longer automatically qualify for Make a Wish. This is a very recent development, and the medication doesn’t work for everyone - from memory, it works in about 80% of cases. This development is so dramatic it’s left some patients unprepared to live a near-normal lifespan. After all, would you save for retirement if you knew you would be dead by 30?

On a different podcast, I listened to a guy talk about his experience running an absolutist free speech forum on FB. Everyone was allowed to talk about anything. The only rule was you cannot block admins. He said that it was quickly a race to the bottom as white nationalists and hate mongers dominated the group. He ran it for a couple of years before shutting it down. Six weeks later, one of the former members posted a manifesto on the internet and went on a shooting rampage - sorry, exercised his 2nd in the extreme. He shuddered to think what would have happened to him if the shooter had posted his manifesto in the group and the police investigated him and the group. Absolute free speech runs up against the same irony of tolerance. In order to exist, it must be intolerant of intolerance.

Integrity is the currency that only has value to you if it has value to those around you at least in a political sense the Old Guard thought there were consequences and that Integrity mattered to their peers and their constituents at least the veneer of integrity the newer groups know that it doesn't matter and it doesn't matter to each other or their constituents there's no reason to bring Integrity back for them not unless Their peers or constituents change
