Tale #139: A Barney Rerun (Part 1)

It was December fifteenth, 1999.
It had been a little more than a year since the 'incident'. A little more than a year since Brandon had become a 'Barney Baby' at the hands of his unfriendly family friend: Kenny.
The incident, partially of his own making, where he and Kenny had spent most of their week together alone. Where Brandon had convinced the younger boy not to report that their nanny hadn't shown up, and instead to enjoy the freedom of doing whatever they wanted without supervision. The same incident where Kenny had rendered Brandon brainwashed at the wicked clutches of Barney the dinosaur.
Trapped in a bouncer with a pail's worth of Kenny's smelly diapers around his waist; forced to watch Barney for days on end, while the fiber-packed food he was given made its way out into the stack of diapers. Just pooping his pants and watching Barney, for days.
It'd broken him. The infantile dreck had tainted his mind and taken him back to mental infancy; only when separated from the purple dinosaur long enough, would the brainwashing begin to have its effects fade, and some of those brain cells would jumpstart back to full functionality.
But that hadn't been easy to accomplish, since Kenny had decided by that point that he was finally too old for Barney himself. He'd offloaded a truckload of his Barney memorabilia onto Brandon: video tapes, dolls, cassettes, figurines, clothes, dishware, and anything else that a corporation could think to print the dinosaur on.
Most notably being the thick diapers that Kenny had made sure Brandon had a healthy supply of. As long as those had been taped around his butt, ready for filling, he always had Barney close to him. Close to his mind.
Recovery had been slow and arduous. Brandon had spent the rest of that year bouncing around child psychologists and he'd been put into the Special Education classroom. It was only whenever one of the shrinks finally took note of how obsessed with Barney that Brandon seemed, that things finally started to get better.
Slowly, some of the Barney stuff was taken away from him, and his cognition looked to make improvements. Sadly, the dots were never completely connected; his psychologist instead thought that the Barney obsession was more of a symptom than a cause. She thought that by treating the boy more like his actual age would trigger him to snap out of this odd baby-like state that he'd been stuck in. The removal of the offending iconography was practically a coincidence, and Barney itself was never fully blamed for any of what had happened.
Which was why he still had a few Barney items floating around his bedroom, even now that he'd mostly recovered. Brandon himself wasn't even completely aware of the impact that they had on him, but he had strong emotions that told a story of their own. A bizarre dissonance where he both still had a love for the purple dinosaur and the comfort it brought him, and a strong repulsion for what it represented.
He'd only returned to a normal class a few months ago, and he'd been returned to the grade that he'd already been in before this happened. Much to his chagrin, it was the same class that Kenny had found himself in.
Brandon didn't fully remember what Kenny had done to him. He remembered bits and pieces, but not the whole thing. What he did know though, was that Kenny had done something terrible to him, and that the younger boy was not to be trusted. Luckily, he hadn't had to interact with Kenny very much in class, and Kenny hadn't gone blabbing about the mushbrained pantspooper that Brandon had so recently been.
The aftermath had left him still having a few lingering quirks: His intellect was still mildly impacted, which made his schoolwork more uphill than it had been the first time he was in this grade. His stature had remained dormant, leaving him looking pretty much the same as he had the year before; that might have been more of a coincidence, but it hadn't helped his dampened self-esteem. Then, while he was technically pottytrained again, he was still a little accident prone.
He'd finally moved back to underpants during the daytime, but he still needed diapers at night, because he couldn't help but wet and poop the bed every time he went to sleep. He would often also have some close calls during the day, and even a few lingering potty accidents, which he'd been very fortunate to avoid having in the middle of class.
Brandon also hadn't completely kicked the thumbsucking habit that he'd picked up while all baby-brained, which he'd unknowingly done a few times in front of his peers, much to his humiliation. Still, it was better than being attached to a pacifier like he had been for months and months.
All in all, Brandon was 'better', but he wasn't fully recovered. In this fragile state of rehabilitation, he was also vulnerable to relapse, though he didn't know exactly *how* vulnerable he really was.
Until it was time for Winter vacation.
His parents had mentioned earlier on that they would be spending their vacation at their timeshare, but it wasn't until they had already arrived, that the lede had been unburied. They would be sharing their timeshare with close family friends, which was to say...
Kenny. Kenny and his parents. Brandon's parents were really good friends with Kenny's parents, especially after the tribulations that had come out of the 'incident', and so they had all planned to spend the holidays together at the beautiful villa that they had booked, along with Brandon's grandparents, and his aunt and her children.
Brandon didn't figure it out until he'd noticed a familiar vehicle already parked outside the villa, then his parents had casually dropped that truth bomb on him, as if it'd been an unimportant detail. They genuinely thought that the two boys got along, and they thought highly of Kenny, who had shown his 'maturity' by keeping Brandon safe from himself whenever they'd been alone together.
Furthermore, Kenny had been very 'nice' and had played with Brandon in the months that the boy had been a Barney baby, not that Brandon really remembered that or trusted it was benevolent.
The Winter getaway was large enough to accommodate several families, but not without some bunking. There were only four bedrooms, which meant that his parents would get one, his grandparents would get one, his aunt would get one with her daughter and youngest child, and the final one would be split between Brandon, Kenny, and one of his cousins.
"Long time, no see!" Kenny would chirp at him, "You don't like to talk to me at school, so we haven't really caught up since you stopped being a dumb-dumb."
Brandon had mumbled some excuse to leave the room and had wandered off to supposedly explore where they would be having their holiday festivities. The less he had to say to Kenny, the better; he hadn't liked the boy much to begin with, since he'd found him infantile and obnoxious, and the last year had only strengthened his repulsion.
Kenny seemed to know that Brandon was avoiding him; he didn't get offended, but instead just having a knowing smile the whole time. Only he had the full memory of what had gone down, and only he understood what had happened to Brandon to turn him into a drooly pantsfiller.
The next couple of days would be deceptively average, aside from the shame of Brandon having his cousin finding out about his nighttime problems, or the disappointed look that Kenny had given Brandon's underwear when they'd been getting dressed for the day, as if he had fully expected to see those big Barney diapers that he'd originally given him.
The lack of structure in those couple of days meant that Brandon could avoid Kenny without much trouble. They might eat at the same table and sleep in the same bedroom, but that didn't mean Brandon had to be around him any more than that.
But then the first structured activity would present itself: a fun, little 'secret Santa' game.
Everyone would go into town for a few hours, and while they were out, they would find a small gift to give to their selected name. Brandon had gotten his older cousin, Fiona, and had struggled to find something to give her; he'd finally settled on a stuffed polar bear with a festive hat.
Later that evening, before bed, with warm coco and ugly sweaters, the three families would join together for their secret Santa. Brandon was having a good time, laughing and smiling at the festivities; everyone was enjoying their gifts, at least up until his younger cousin, Ralph, opened his and found cute socks instead of a toy.
He threw an embarrassing fit and got scolded by his mother, who made a point of saying that he should be grateful for getting anything at all, and that he should go ahead and put on the socks to show his appreciation. A few public swats to the tush were enough to convince him of her point and he begrudgingly tugged them on his feet with a frown.
Nobody else had issues with their gifts, as kitschy as the might be, up until it was time for Brandon to open his. The warm smile he'd been nurturing was gone in an instant once he'd torn a big streak of wrapping paper off the middle.
He saw the face of Barney, and it made him feel unsettled. Unable to stop there, he pulled off the rest of the paper and saw the 'gift' in its fullest: a five pack of Barney-printed underpants.
Well, at least a *sort* of underpants. The longer he looked at the packaging and the briefs themselves, the more apparent it came that these were not ordinary. They were 'quadruple-seated', and that made them far close to training briefs than big boy undies. These were the type of briefs that a chronic pantspooper would wear; a heavy soiler that still had the prospect of using the toilet, but wasn't completely reliable on following through.
His silence was deafening, and it was Kenny who finally broke it with what was undoubtedly a rehearsed spiel:
"I saw them and just had to get them for you! I know how much you like Barney. I'm so proud that you're out of diapers now, well except at night, so undies just seemed so fitting..."
From an outside perspective, it sounded like Kenny was being courteous and thoughtful with his present. His acting was good enough to convince everyone else in the room that this had been an act free of any malice, free of any mockery, but Brandon felt differently.
Ralph openly laughed, the six year old thinking himself too old for babyish things like Barney. "You like **BARNEY**? That's for babies!"
Brandon felt his face get hot, "I-I don't! I don't like Barney..."
His mother thought it was just boyish indignation, so she chuckled and pointed out that he still had his Barney doll, so he must still like the purple dinosaur, and that he shouldn't lie about it.
That got a few more laughs around the room, mostly gentle ones from adults who knew what it was like for a kid to be embarrassed by their own interests. In Brandon's case, being twelve now, he had a very valid reason to be humiliated by the insinuation that he was a Barney fan.
"I-I don't want these. You can keep them. You liked Barney way more than I did." Brandon practically hissed as he pushed them toward Kenny.
The younger boy raised an eyebrow and shook his head, "You don't need to be *embarrassed*, Brandon. You should be proud that you're wearing underwear again; since you were in diapers for so long..."
"I don't want them!"
Ralph huffed, "Mommy, you made me wear my socks. Doesn't Brandon gotta 'appreciate' his gift too?"
Brandon's aunt didn't get a chance to reply before his own mother stepped in, "Brandon, you're being rude. Your friend got you something he thought you might like, so I think you should be more grateful. Go ahead and try them on."
"B-but mom, I--"
"--No buts! Except yours in those undies."
Kenny was giving him that smug smile and Brandon looked down at his own pajama pants. Since they were doing the secret Santa this late, he had already been taped into his diaper for the night, which his mother obviously knew. She didn't seem to care though, thinking that everyone here already knew he needed them to sleep in, so what would it matter if she had him expose the garment?
"Don't make count, mister." The woman warned with crossed arms.
Brandon groaned softly and opened the package of underwear. Once he had a pair in his hands, he could feel just how thick they really were. They were honestly more like training briefs than he'd already feared; intended for pantspoopers for sure. Seeing Barney close-up also made his mind feel like it was rumbling.
Down came his pajama pants and the white of his bulky youth diaper was suddenly on full display. Thick, plastic-backed, and high-rising, to help prevent blowouts. It wasn't a diaper meant for mere bedwetting, that much was obvious.
He could feel everyone's eyes on him as he took off his pants. Ralph and Kenny had been the only ones aside from his parents who had seen his diaper thus far; Kenny's parents had seen them too, but not since he had lived as a drooling dummy. Not wanting to draw things out, Brandon quickly pulled the pair of briefs over his diaper and got them snugly into place like a diaper cover. His diaper was still entirely noticeable underneath the bulky briefs, and the extra layer only made the garment look thicker.
"Aw, those are adorable." His mother gushed, "What a thoughtful present, Kenny!"
Ralph was laughing at him, even after his mother had scolded him to shush, and Kenny was just smiling widely. While Brandon had to sit back down in the humiliating present, the game would continue on, with the rest of the presents being less exciting.
Afterwards would be some time to converse, at least for the adults, while the children still had some time before they were to be ushered off to bed. At some point during the game, Brandon had lost track of his pajama pants, so he was searching around the commons room with his padded rump swaying about.
Kenny had sneakily taken them and put them back in the bedroom, wanting to make sure that Brandon's humiliation wouldn't be so short-lived, and that those briefs saw some fresh air while they could.
It wasn't immediately clear why Kenny was behaving like this. He had initially 'bullied' Brandon as a 'tit-for-tat' kind of thing, whenever the two had been sharing a living space without supervision; he'd gotten mad at his little roommate and had just gone too far with his retribution. After that, it had just been about covering his own butt from getting in trouble.
Now, though? Kenny wasn't a bully by nature, but there was something about Brandon that just brought it out in him. He had enjoyed watching every moment of Brandon being a dumb pantspooping Barney baby; it had filled him with a sense of power that nothing else had come close to. He'd been disappointed to see Brandon returning to the way he was, and he'd had nagging thoughts about what it might be like if he were to commit a little sabotage.
That's what this holiday season would be like for him. It would be about sabotaging Brandon backwards and unraveling all the progress that he'd made thus far. If Kenny's intuition proved true, then the Barney briefs would be the first domino.
And they were!
Brandon had been feeling odd ever since he saw them, and even worse once he'd put them on. They represented everything wrong with what he had lived as for a year, and they gave his head a funny feeling. That tingle was like a fog, and he felt as though he could almost hear that theme song playing in his mind.
And once that theme song started playing, his brain cells started to shut off. While traipsing around the room in a daze, he would stop by the fireplace and rub his head. Nobody else could sense what was wrong, that Brandon was fighting to stay mentally afloat.
His knees started to bend and fingers tightened into two crude fists in front of him. It was something that required no intent, no actual thought behind it. Something he had done a thousand times or more since his brainwashing. A little drool peeked out of his hanging mouth and with an intrinsic grunt, the lad was starting to push. The inside of his brain was nothing but 'I love you, you love me' and static, even while a mighty turd made its way crackling into his babypants.
The cotton material of the briefs, even while being very thick, still fit the shape of the diaper, which was to say that a fat, bulbous lump began to take form. Bigger and bigger it grew, until it looked like he was smuggling a baseball in the back.
The only thing that would snap him out of his daze was the sharp gasp of an onlooker who had watched in shock as the boy had brazenly dumped in his seat like an oversized toddler.
"Oh my gosh! Aunt Linda! Brandon went POOP!"
That snapped Brandon right out of it. Just in time for his mother to come storming in and for him to realize that his nighttime diaper had seen some major evening usage in the back.
This holiday season, Kenny would be giving him the gift of bliss. The kind of bliss that could only come from being a totally mindless Barney baby that drooled and pooed in his diapers all day long. Before the vacation was over, Kenny would make sure to cause a full-on Barney relapse!
