Tale #137: A Thanksgiving in Diapers

"B-but, I mean, that'll be *hours* before bedtime!"
"Yes, but you always fall asleep in the car and you usually tucker out after we have Thanksgiving dinner. I'm not taking any chances with you ruining your nice clothes. I've already had to do this with your brother before, so it shouldn't come as a surprise."
"Yeah, but Theo is...Well...He...It isn't the same!"
"That's right, PJ. It isn't the same. Theodore wears his Pull-Ups on the car ride and before bed, because he might fall asleep and wet himself. You'll be wearing your diapers, because you might fall asleep and poop yourself."
It had become a pretty pointed conversation between PJ and his mother. It was the night before their trip that she had informed him about itinerary and expectations; it'd been where she'd casually dropped that PJ would be wearing a diaper for much of the day, if not basically the whole day.
He'd wake up in a diaper, obviously, and then he'd be changed into a new one for the five hour car trip over to his grandparents' house; once they got there, he might get a reprieve, but it would be short lived as he would need to be diapered again before dinner, as he couldn't be trusted to stay awake afterwards. Then obviously he'd be diapered again for bed, or more realistically, he'd just be wearing the same one for the whole evening.
Anyway it got sliced, he would be wearing a diaper for the vast majority of the day. Around extended family. His brother, of course, was ecstatic about it.
It conjured memories of the previous year, when Theo's Ninjamas had been a point of discussion during a heated sibling argument. PJ hadn't thought twice about throwing his little brother under the bus in front of their cousins, and so everyone had quickly learned about his little nighttime problem. That had obviously led to some serious taunting, which PJ had thought to be deserved, but now the shoe may be on the other foot! The Ninjamas would be old news, but a diaper? That would be fresh (though perhaps not in a more literal sense.)
And so it would come to be, the next morning when he woke up to a squishy bottom, that his mother wouldn't simply dispose of the dirty diaper and let him get dressed, but that she would tape him into a fresh one for the road.
It was a long drive of about six hours, which was why they always spent the night at their grandparent's house after coming for a holiday. With such a lengthy time on the road, it was also why Theo had spent it padded in prior years, and now the dishonor would belong to PJ as well.
With them leaving as early as they were, and with the expectation that they might fall back asleep, both boys would get herded into the car with their pajamas on. They'd stop by a drive-through on their way out of town to pick up some breakfast to go, and then it would be a couple of hours until they made any stops.
PJ tried to stay awake by playing on his Gameboy, while his brother was content to drift off back to sleep. As entertained as he was by Kirby's adventures through magic mirrors, the motion of the car eventually made him feel a little queasy and he had to shut the clamshell of his SP.
He instead tried to shift his focus to watching the side of the road as they barreled down the highway, but that just made him start to feel drowsy. PJ hadn't yet taken a nap outside of bedtime since his accidents had come to be, so he really didn't know if he needed to be worried. The last thing he wanted to do was to confirm that his parents had been right to stick him in a diaper for the roadtrip.
He fought to keep his eyelids up, but they kept drooping and he kept catching himself nodding off. The gentle rhythm of the moving car was like being rocked, and bit by bit he succumbed to its lullaby.
Theodore would wake up before his older brother did, about two and a half hours after their journey had begun. To his pleasant surprise, his Ninjama was still dry, though he did wake up with the need to pee. He looked at his brother, who was slumped against the window and drooling in his sleep.
As fate would have it, Theo woke up just in time to hear a soft squelching sound coming from his brother's pajama pants. It was subtle and it didn't reach the front seat with its muffled volume, but it was an undeniable sound to the boy sitting right next to it.
"Hey, sport! You up? We're going to stop up ahead for a quick break and some lunch. Do you need to change?" Their father asked from the front.
"No, I'm all dry." Theo responded proudly.
"Attaboy! Is your brother still asleep?"
"Yeah."
"Well, go ahead and give him a shake. We'll be there in about ten minutes."
Theodore contemplated whether or not he should tattle about what he'd just heard, but he ended up deciding against it. He thought it would be more entertaining to watch PJ squirm and admit what he'd done; unlike being wet, PJ wouldn't be able to hide being poopy for all that long, not that he'd be able to stand sitting around in it either.
He gave the older boy's shoulder a shake and PJ's head snapped up from where it'd been resting on the window. "H-huh? Are we there?"
"Not yet, we're about halfway. We're going to stop to stretch our legs and grab a bite to eat. Do you need to change while we stop?" Their father asked.
PJ yawned and stretched his arms. He wasn't used to such a question, so his first thought was that the man was referring to the pajamas that the boys were clad in, to which he did think it was probably time to get out of. "Like, clothes?"
"No, I mean your night pants." The man used the same veiled term for PJ's diaper that he used for Theo's Pull-Ups.
"N-no! M'ready to take it off, though. I'm not gonna sleep anymore in the car..." He grumbled as he adjusted himself in his seat and sudddnly felt something warm smearing around his butt.
"We already discussed this, PJ." Their mother curtly replied.
Theo was smiling while he watched his brother's expression turn sour, not from their mother's response, but from the realization that he indeed needed a change. He leaned over and quietly feigned sniffing the air around PJ's seat, "...You kinda smell."
While Theo might have been playing it up, PJ could start to smell the faint aroma of his accident beginning to waft up from his diaper. The older boy screwed up his face and got red, "S-shut up...!"
"What are you two bickering about?"
"I think PJ farted." Theo fibbed, wanting to draw attention to the matter without outright accusing PJ of messing himself.
"PJ, are you *sure* you don't need to change? We're not going to stop again for a few hours." Their mother said, looking back at the two.
The part of him that wanted to retain his dignity was prepared to lie to the bitter end, but the rational part of him wasn't willing to spend the next few hours sitting in a dirty diaper, especially whenever the smell would only worsen.
"...Y-yeah, maybe I need to change..." He murmured quietly, looking down at his lap with a face that could be mistaken for a tomato.
The family would stop soon after at a large trucker's pitstop; it had a gas station and a diner, and it was a place that they regularly stopped while making this voyage to see their grandparents. PJ carefully climbed out of the car and could feel his dirty diaper clinging to his butt, the load having had little room to properly spread out from the seated position that he'd soiled himself in.
His mother came around and peeled back his waistband to take a look inside, "That's a big one alright... Theo, go with your father to the bathroom, and PJ can come with me."
"I can't go into the women's restroom!"
"Would you rather me change you out here in the parking lot?"
PJ looked around and grimaced at all the activity. Either way would be humiliating, but the women's restroom won out by a small margin; at least in there, there would probably be fewer people to gawk at him. He gave in and she handed him a folded up diaper and the package of wipes to hold, as if to punish him for his accident by making him participate in the cleanup in some way.
Theo shot him a grin whenever their paths diverged, and PJ wanted the ground to simply swallow him up. While Theodore would be going in with their dad to take care of his business like a normal kid, PJ was getting taken by his mom to get his stinky diapee changed; the contrast couldn't be more stark.
When they went inside, they came to find out that the changing table was already in use, by a mother with her toddler. PJ's own mom used the extra time to look down at her son and ask: "Do you still need to go?"
PJ frowned and quietly answered back: "Just number one."
"Well, you might as well just go ahead and go, since I'm about to change you anyway. You're already dirty, so it won't kill you to get a little wet too."
The plain way she said it was almost more egregious than the content itself; she was casually calling for PJ to just let go and pee his pants, which really hammered home where her opinion of him had drifted. His sudden onset bedpooping had really lowered the bar of her expectations of his maturity, and subsequently the appropriate age to treat him as.
He couldn't fathom a similar scenario where she'd tell his little brother to do the same thing, just as a matter of pragmatism. PJ bit his lip and shook his head slowly, "Can't I just go in the toilet?"
His mother looked a little annoyed and swatted him on the tush, "Couldn't you have done *that* on the toilet? We're in public, PJ, I can't just have you strutting from the table to the toilet like a little jaybird, and it'll mess up your tapes if I have to take it off for you to go."
As much as it pained him, he had to admit he saw a certain logic to her analysis, even if he didn't agree with the outcome. He also took it that this meant he wouldn't be getting a potty break while they were here for lunch, so unless he wanted to sit around in a pissy diaper for the next few hours, he needed to take care of things now.
PJ broadened his stance slightly and took a breath. He'd never intentionally peed his pants before, so he had to imagine that he was just at the urinal. The mental image helped a bit, and after some coaxing, his full bladder willingly began to empty out into his puffy padding. Not being a bedwetter, he hadn't actually felt what it was like for the diaper to get soaked like this, but he had to shamefully admit to himself that it wasn't so bad.
He felt the garment droop as it swelled, getting heavy with the saturation and sagging against his pajama pants. There had been such a rush this morning, that he hadn't actually peed since the night before, and then he'd gone and had Coke with breakfast; as a result, the sudden massive surge was actually a bit more than his diaper bargained for...
This wouldn't become apparent until it was finally his turn to get on the changing table. His mother lifted him by the armpits and got him on top of the table, and that's when he felt a strange dampness against the back of his thighs. His overly soaked diaper had leaked upon impact, leaving the telltale crescent moons on the seat of his pajama pants.
"Oh dear... You must have soaked through." She tutted her tongue while she pulled the pants off of him and gazed down at his thoroughly devastated diaper. She grabbed a plastic grocery bag out of her purse and carefully placed the dampened pants inside.
"I-I need those to go back to the car...!" PJ fussed, starting to panic.
"There's no time for that, honey. We need to get lunch and get back on the road. Besides, your father has the car keys and he's probably already getting us a table."
"I-I can't just walk around like a baby! People will laugh at me!"
She shushed him gently and started to undo the tabs of his diaper, "Nobody knows you here, honey. They aren't going to pay attention. I'll make sure you have pants before we get to grandma's house, okay?"
What could he really say? Any further attempts at arguing his case would undoubtedly be shut down by someone who had already made up their mind about things, and if he kept whining, then he'd just get himself in more trouble.
Instead, he tried to take what she said to heart. She was right in saying that nobody knew him here, so there would be no long lasting consequences of being seen in such a dire state; it wasn't much, but it was something to grasp onto. Fretting on and on wasn't going to solve anything, so he might as well face the impending challenge with his head held up.
She got him cleaned up and taped into a fresh diaper pretty quickly, and then she let him back down and handed him the balled-up diaper to toss in the trash. That was something that'd become routine in the mornings, whenever she'd gotten him a diaper pail to put in his room; another way to keep him involved with the process.
She oversaw him washing his hands afterwards and then led him out by the hand. His pajama top only hung down far enough to cover the top half of his diaper, if even that, so it was pretty plainly on display as they headed into the diner to meet back up with the rest of their family.
Theo and his father were already situated in a booth, and their reactions were sharply different from one another whenever PJ made his appearance. His dad looked appalled, while his brother looked positively tickled.
"There was a little leak." His mother mentioned as she ushered PJ into the booth and sat next to him. "Nothing serious."
Lunch was surprisingly civil. Theo was restrained in his mockery by the watchful eyes of their parents, and the waitress was more professional about seeing a ten year old in a diaper than PJ would have expected. Being in a booth, on the inner side, the other customers weren't able to get a good look at him either.
PJ was able to forget his embarrassment and instead enjoy an ill-advised chili-dog plate. It'd actually been the same meal he'd gotten last time that they were here, and while not of a spectacular flavor, he'd remembered being amused by how gassy it'd made him and how he'd bugged his little brother with the noxious fumes he'd been able to concoct.
One would think such an immature decision would have been avoided in light of the problems that had been plaguing the boy, and how willingly choosing something off the menu like that was a recipe for disaster, but PJ genuinely hadn't thought about it like that.
He'd gravitated toward his meal choice based off previous vibes, without even remembering why those vibes had come to be. It was another mistake that was going to make this trip memorable for all the wrong reasons.
It was stacking up to be a Thanksgiving where he wasn't all that thankful for anything.
