Could you please respond to the observations made by Rick Perlstein about the cultural significance of Star Wars in his book Reaganland: America’s Right Turn? Do you see Perlstein’s reading of Star Wars as contradictory to your own, or can your perspectives be reconciled? Perlstein cites the success of Star Wars as a sign that Americans had come to desire optimistic and morally simplistic stories. He contextualizes it as a continuation of the trend that saw Rocky win Best Picture, beating more serious films like Taxi Driver and All the President’s Men. He quotes Pauline Kael’s review of Star Wars: “The excitement of the those who call it the film of the year goes way past nostalgia to the feeling that now is the time to return to childhood.” Persltein concludes “Star Wars was a Ronald Reagan sort of film.”
