I was a bit confused by the distance task as well at first, but I think I understand it now. I believe the distance they showed at the end was the total distance between their cutout and every other cutout. So even though Susan and Julian were right next to each other, they were actually still further on average from the others than Sue. That's why the score would've been 5 to Sam, 4 Lucy, 3 Julian, 2 Susan, 1 Sue. Then Julian and Susan lost the 2 points for being the closest to one single individual other cutout.
