I do love series 2 a lot, but it gets better! I don't know if there's a better run of episodes than 2x3–2x6 though, and this one is definitely one of the best-written as you said. Would you watch the bloopers? They're on YouTube for each series.

Yeah love Thomas's backstory, be careful of spoilers about the ghosts deaths though mate.

Probably the only time I’ve ever felt sorry for Thomas is this episode. We do eventually get to know how all the ghosts die. But it takes right up to the penultimate episode of the final series before we find out about one of them.
