This is the current state of this (now past) weekend's project. What is it , you ask? Why, it's just a desk. :)
No, really. :) My current computer desk- in fact, the only computer desk I've ever had, is a cheap pressboard thing, that I've moved around so many times most of the screws are stripped. I've also had to modify and reinforce it multiple times over the years, and now it's just a mess of proverbial bubble gum and baling wire.
It's a "corner desk" in the same configuration as shown above, and I have my graphics tablet on the left "wing". Except it overhangs the actual desk by an easy eight inches.
Given all the other half-fixes I've done to this desk, rather than band-aiding it one more time, I've decided to do what I've been thinking about doing for at least three or four years now, and just build a new one.
The comic Doc isn't just made up from whole cloth, y'know. :)
I'm implementing a bunch of additions and upgrades I wanted to do for years- more power outlets, longer side "wings", a more modular monitor mounting system (one of these days I'm gonna splurge on one of those big long curved jobbies [drools]) a more modular PC cubby (that can take a wider variety of tower or case shapes, from rackmount to ATX) better cable management, and more.
Yeah, I can't really spare the time, but it's August in Alaska- the leaves are already starting to fall off the trees. If I don't do it now, it'll be next summer, and given the amount of time I spend sitting in front of this thing, it needs to be better laid out and more comfortable.

I have to say, that is a nice desk base. Do you have provisions for built in drawers?

Less than 100 lb, as it sits. Once I have the top on and all the electricals in place, it might barely break 200. Hefty, but not battleship hefty. :)

Either build it yourself or pay a couple thousand. The only other desk I even found that I think I'd have liked, that I also thought was built well enough to last more than a few years, would have cost some $1500 and likely another $500 in shipping. I'll only have about $400-$500 in this while thing when it's done. (Not counting, of course, for labor. :) )

Just remember the weight issues when you eventually have to move that thing. I got an old computer desk from the 1960's, 8 feet long, 4ft high, all solid wood and steel construction. It takes 4 people to move it assembled, two if you take it completely apart.

I've long been planning a similar rebuild on my own desk. It is nowhere near as extensively framed as that though, and I have neither the tooling nor a place to build one (nor, if truth be told, probably the skills).

I need a desk that solid. Pitty just about the only thing on the market is press board.

Not quite. Due to the shape, the only way to get it into the house is if it can be at least partially dismantled. There's a left and a right 'wing', bolted together at the middle by the trapezoid-shaped piece up top, and the crossbar at the bottom. Currently only weighs about 80-90 pounds. it's only 1/8" wall tubing.
