Windscale was actually a real-life nuclear power plant that was almost a British Chernobyl. There was a big fire in one of the reactors that released radioactive dust into the atmosphere, but luckily 95% of it was stopped by safety filters. Most involved in construction thought they were a waste of time and money, but without them things would've been much worse...
