Stopped checking Discord so I'm a bit late to the party about the game but I did read everything there and I do have some thoughts. As much as I like the comic and comics as a medium, I do think that if you were to do a spin-off/adaptation for the story then a game would be a natural medium to branch out. A convenience store sim/visual novel idea reminds me of VA-11 HALL-A, which is another VN where we follow a blue collar worker as they interact with different customers. That one does a solid job exploring the world and characters almost purely through dialogue, so I could easily see a IWBTWR game doing the same to explore Hong Kong and its residents in a similar way. That said, while it's possible to explore everything through conversations, adding even simple mechanics can go a long way in exploring themes and is a unique advantage that video games have over other mediums. Personally I think the comic will always be the primary way of engaging with the story, but a game alongside it opens up a lot of doors. It can include any number of spin-off or supplemental storylines, stuff that acts almost as a sort of B plot to the main stuff we got with the comic. In the same vein, it can naturally reintroduce previous characters (art girl for example). Especially if you plan on later letting people play as both Jenny and Zoey. Could you imagine dealing with a character from Jenny's past while you play as Zoey? Or vice versa? Lots of possibilities but it's like that with all art. As long as you find sustainable meaning in it, it'll be a good thing to try. Also, anything you made for the animation you can splice between bits of gameplay and repurpose for a trailer for the game instead, music and all. Heck, you could use the music as the credits theme or something.
