“I’M NOT SLEEPING IN THERE.” Marvin shouted, slamming his foot down.
“What on earth are you talking about?”
“IT’S A BABIES CRIB I WON’T SLEEP THERE.” He continued to shout.
Jill was shocked, but remained quite calm during Marvin’s outburst, it was no different than a naughty toddler and his voice failed to carry any authority with it. She shook her head in astonishment and grabbed her cousins chin, sharply twisted him so he now faced the regular bed against the opposite wall.
“I mean, I was assuming you would want to sleep in the proper bed but maybe with the way you are acting the crib would be more suitable for you.”
Marvin felt himself relaxing as he laid eyes on the normal single mattress bed with just plain regular blue sheets and a white quilt, no crib bars and no mobile hanging over it. He couldn’t believe he had failed to see it, the room wasn’t huge, big enough to accommodate the two beds a change table and the more he looked around it also featured a rather spacious wardrobe that ran across the back wall. It must have been everything that had happened earlier at the station he reasoned; taking a deep breath he turned to face Jill in order to apologise.
“What on earth is all this screaming Marvin, what happened?” Came Mildred’s voice as she appeared in the hallway.
“Marvin thought he was going to be made to sleep in the crib so he had a little tantrum.” Jill said, shaking her head at the ridiculousness of the whole situation.
“I swear Marvin, you are acting more and more like the baby that maybe we should start treating you as.” Mildred said, glowering at Marvin, who stood there with red rosy cheeks looking mighty ashamed of himself.
“I… Was just about to apologise Auntie, I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.” Marvin said this as he was looking visibly shook by Mildred’s scolding.
Mildred crossed her arms and started tapping her foot. “Well go on then we’re waiting.”
Marvin quietly cleared his throat before speaking. “I’m sorry for shouting at you Jill.”
“Look at your cousin when you’re talking to her, don’t forget to tell her the way you were acting.” Mildred commanded.
Marvin made sure he looked Jill in the eye this time before speaking. “I’m sorry Jill for shouting at you and for the way I acted.”
Before Jill could respond Mildred spoke up again. “What way were you acting Marvin, I want you to tell us the specifics.” Marvin remained silent and shrugged his shoulders. “Say sorry Jill for being so naughty and acting like a bad little baby throwing a tantrum because I’m a big boy now and didn’t want to sleep in the crib.”
Jill watched her cousin with interest, there was no way he was going to repeat that she thought to herself.
“I’m sorry Jill for throwing a tantrum like a little baby and being naughty I didn’t want to sleep in that crib because I’m a big boy now.” Marvin said almost teary eyed from the humiliation.
Jill could hardly believe it, the shock was visible on her face and Marvin could see it. Suddenly she felt a huge shift in the power dynamic between the two of them. Her older cousin who used to boss her around when they were much younger had been scolded and humiliated in front her of her and he had done nothing to resist it. Suddenly her mind was filled with different ideas on how to further embarrass Marvin and make sure that he knew she was the one in charge now.
“That will do I suppose, wasn’t perfect but that probably can’t be expected of you now can it.” As Mildred spoke down to Marvin he wasn’t sure if was supposed to respond or not, so instead he opted to lightly shake his head in agreement. “Any more acting up from you Marvin and I promise you will be sleeping in that crib with the rails up and mobile on. Not to mention we’ll probably have to put you back in diapers since you seem to be having such a hard time to make it to the toilet, I wouldn’t trust you to last the night locked in your crib.”
Marvin blushed deeply; Jill’s mouth was now agape, what had happened at the train station she wondered. She desperately needed to find out, she also didn’t fail to realize she was gifted the next phase of her plan from her mother to make sure Marvin would continue his decline in the pecking order. He was clearly already on the bottom but she would make it her goal to cement that fact, she now just needed to make sure he acted up once more before bed tonight in order to guarantee that he slept in the crib, having him in diapers would be icing on the cake. She couldn’t imagine anything more humiliating for him; once he was back in diapers she would make sure he wouldn’t leave them the whole trip.
