Jasus

All Inheritances are made by a divine dead person giving out part of their power to a worthy succesor. The eternal flame is mearly split up in two parts and can not actually choose who gets a half of the inheritance. This chapter showed that they are not as disconnected as everyone belived an can with limits choose.

Mark

I have enjoyed this story for a long time and still very much do. But I strongly disliked the abrupt, out-of-nowhere, unexplained way in which Yuan Tao was "defeated" here. Since when is the Eternal Flame a power that chooses its wielders and randomly incinerates one of them if it "likes" the other better? Did I miss something? It was always presented as some kind of bloodline power that could be wielded depending on one's affinity, competence, skill, strenght of conviction or simliar xianxia buzzwords...; not some weird entity with its own mind, that incinerates people it dislikes ?!?!

Catherine

Hopefully that’s not the way it happens. At least for most. Maybe most will just lose access to it other than those deemed worthy

Kiwilord

More importantly, he feels like a really big character to throw aside

Kiwilord

I'm actually curious to see our favourite general win, mainly because it would be fun to see the sword side confused

Gardor

Was Liu Jin in this chapter, to get a mention in the character list?

Bonifacio Mario Peña Jr.

Eternal flame: unworthy bastard should have been a bard instead of a monk/sorcerer.

Guy

I think that "higher cultivation equals victory" will remain true, but what type of cultivation you're measuring (i.e. qi vs. how profound your understanding of your own dao is) will change.

Andres Ceva

Thanks for the chapter!

Robert Davidson

All three segments of this chapter have reinforced my suspicion that the simple "higher cultivation equals victory" paradigm is going to be shown to be very wrong as the story goes on.

Derek Walker

I think maybe his interaction with the light in the dead plains tipped the scales in favor Feng Zhi as far as the eternal flame goes.

burning_the_paper

I don't think it's dislike, but more that there's so much going on, so many questions being raised, that people hunger for answers and get impatient and frustrated. I am dying to know what changes were wrought on Liu Jin. I want to know where Huang and Lu Mei are, I want to see what the Storm Dragon is ultimately plotting, to read about the result of all the fights we have been introduced to in this chapter etc. If nothing else it should stand as a testament to the quality of Mat's writing - that people care enough to get emotional over it.

Valerian

Hmm, I can see the danger of letting the Eternal Flame recombine in one person. Only the worthy inheritor will survive, the rest will be hollowed out by the Flame and turn to ash. That'll devastate the Feng clan.

Guy

I think that last scene tells us that even though the mind and power of the eternal flame are split there's still some instincts embedded within it or some connection between the two. There's also the question of how were they split in the first place. Considering how much weaker cultivators are in this age it seems like it must've been done willingly for some reason. But there's lots to think about in this chapter. These types of chapters tend to age like fine wine but make me want more when there posted. Perhaps there's some chance you'll take pity on us poor innocent souls and post another one 👀? In all seriousness thank you for the chapter.

Guy

The context clues makes me think that the DFS guy tried to revive(presumably in a twisted way) someone in the storm dragon bloodline in some way. But I'm not quite sure who it could be the best guesses I have are the Storm Dragon himself, Jin's grandpa, or Jin's dad.

Nicholas Crowley

So who has a green cloak? It feels like someone from across the dead plains, but I dont know who it could be. If he's with the death fashioning scripture, that's something, but I dont think that's everything.

Pete

Well that is the danger with relying on a force that can make choices.

Nyktione

I cannot understand how people dislike these chapter without Liu Jin. Yes, he is the protagonist, but these chapters are important for worldbuilding and I place my trust in the author, that the payoff is coming and that it will be more than satisfactory.
