If MB is half as cunning as everyone in the comments seem to think (me included), my best guess is that the true trap is in the other restrictions. Not sure how, but I'd bet on it. The only alternative to me is that there's no trap at all; dude is literally just trying to amuse himself—which is a great approach, too. Not everything has to be about schemes. The way I see it, LJ is already becoming more like MB. The way he treated the soldiers is evidence. The way he talks about them as trash is evidence. He started getting molded from the moment he last talked to the sect's Emperor. I fully believe that's when his Dao seed first got watered. Yet, it seems like the only way forward. We saw plenty of evidence that cultivation in this novel is about challenging one's beliefs over and over again. It's refinement in its purest sense. All impurities that you mistaken as crucial for yourself are hammered down until only the Dao remains. Is LJ someone who sees people as trash? Or is it just an impurity coming out to be purged? Is the the Black Dragon reborn or his own sense, walking his own Dao? I would love if this is all MB and the other general are curious about. It seems very fitting to me. In the end, neither seems to really care that much about anything. The second and third most fitting option (which doesn't exclude the previous one) would be if, as was heavily hinted for a long time now, LJ becomes the Survivor in MB's Jar (or maybe the Black Storm Empire's Jar). Or helps the Survivor somehow reach peak Emperor or go past. That would be awesome.

I've considered that as well. But I'm not sure how Murang Bang would benefit from that. I don't see what outing Jin would get him other than maybe confirmation.

I am starting to think the gold lightning requirement is the actual trap here. We know purple lightning is above gold lightning, at least in terms of power, but it's not clear if someone of that bloodline has to first reach gold first, then refine even further to purple, or if upon reaching what would be gold, you unlock purple lightning. I think it may be the latter, which would make Murong Bang's goal to expose Jin as having royal blood. It also fits in with him giving Jin essentially false choices at every step.

We may get that purple lightning reveal after all. Interesting.

Could very well be, though I'd sooner speculate that it's because so many Emperors have become aware of their Dao, and as we've seen, the Dao compels the individual to "walk the path" and the more someone taps into their Dao, the more the aspects of their personality it represents come to dominate the individual. Either way, it's a funny contrast to the idea that Emperors are fully in control of themselves and their surroundings. A good example is Lu Mei's father - Liu Jin himself said he couldn't have impregnated Lu Mei's mother if he hadn't wanted to do so, since Emperors control the body down to a cellular level, yet it happened, and he's seemingly unaware of the fact. His mind betrayed him. Could also be the explanation of why so many old cultivators turn into insane kooks that mess with everyone around them. They've been tapping into their Dao for so long that it has thoroughly warped their persoanlites and amped their most pronounced personality traits up to eleven.

Evidence is, in my opinion, building up that the emperor realm does have a quirk, like renegade's instability and earth's weight. Much like the Feng Patriarch said, Emperors want to mold the world to reflect themselves. I think there might actually be a compulsion to TEACH there.

Was the ‘Think!’ An Invinvincible meme reference?

Mecanimus

Very good points. It certainly makes him more nuanced as an antagonist.

It is interesting how it seems like Murong Bang is genuinely trying to teach Liu Jin something in his own very Murong Bang way. Of course, his lesson is likely to be evil and monstrous, given his nature... but I do not think there is active malice in this, as much as there is in anything Murong Bang does (he is immensely evil, but he is too casual and uncaring about his actions for the word malice to be appropriate, I think). He is having his fun and being his own insane self, of course, but this feels very much like him indulging a favored nephew or something. Murong Bang sees the son of the man he admires most, and thinks he is interesting and clearly ridiculously talented (as expected), but has flawed qualities - Liu Jin has many qualities of the Black Dragon, but not for example his mercilessness and capacity for cruelty. It doesn't strike me as unlikely that Murong Bang would seek to teach him those traits of his father that he is "missing". Or at the very least challenge this Dao that he can undoubtedly see Liu Jin is forming, which I'm sure he would consider to be a healthy exercise.

Blahful

I think this is Xianxia. Gold probably means more conceptual weight. I think amperage is just linear function of qi.

burning_the_paper

Besides the obvious - different color = more power - what does the color of the lighting denote? Higher ampage? The user can pump more watts? Also, would a lighting-wielder have an easier time with the tribulation lighting that strikes those that enter the Heaven Realm?

burning_the_paper

I don't think MB much cares about the place, conquest, or anything else. He might be cunning when he needs to be, but scheming to get the throne is not how he liks to spend his time. I think the reason he's doing all this is just to mess with the son of the Black Dragon - or maybe he's trying to help Liu Jin in his own twisted way? MB doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that cares for anyone, yet from what we've been told he was a devoted follower of the Black Dragon, so he may be trying to help the son.

Mr R

So next mission he'll incentivize him to acquire purple lightning? Maybe MB plans to use Jin to break into the Palace, perhaps through his lineage and the hostages MB's keeping.

Yoav

I wonder how much he would need to level up to get to gold. Iirc only heaven realm cultivators were seen with gold lightning. But maybe for jin its going to be mid earth.

Constenanto

If I recall, Liu Jin has white lightning. I believe it goes blue, then red, then white, then gold...?

Sean Duggan

Someone got a quick reminder on the levels of lightning + where he's currently at? Thanks
