In a Xianxia world, even if you don't have a natural attunement, as long as you consume a treasure that has the relevant natural attunement, you can get attuned to the Qi you want. But reaching the Apex of affinity does depend on natural talent or going through countless trials/tribulations to remake yourself. Another way would be through a contract with a [Spiritual Beast] that is already attuned to the element in question.

Considering that Lei Kong was only surprised by the speed at which Liu Jin attuned his Qi to lightning and not that he could do it at all, I’d say that anybody could do it if they tried hard enough. That said the affinity that one has with the element is probably determined by natural talent and heritage

It has been implied to be a matter of natural talent (thereby in part dependent on heritage) I think. For example a while back Liu Jin stated that he could probably achieve Death/Decay Qi by spending a few days time focusing on it. Further Cui Tian who was able to use metal attuned qi and has, as far as we know, no significant heritage seems to have done so through natural guidance and mentor guidance. I also vaguely remember Liu Jin saying that fire does not suit him so I guess it would be possible but harder to learn and he dislikes it anyway. Additional with attunement likely also influencing Dao (Destruction for Fire/EFC and Frost releated for DFP) it would make sense to limit your focus to the attunements which you actually like/are talented with.

So, here's a question I hope will be answered in a future Q&A: How does Qi attunement work? Can a cultivator just train himself to use a particular element or is there an innate prerequisite? As an example, Liu Jin's two attunements are easy to explain - one comes from his father and the other from his Inheritance, same for Lu Mei. But could he learn to use more elements like fire or water, or is there some sort of mechanism that governs what elements you can use and how many you can learn?

I kind of expected this with how Liu Jin kept drawing attention to how Duke Lai looked sickly and weak despite being in the heaven realm and supposedly having healthy Qi. Now the question is when exactly he started working with/became part of DHS. I’m leaning towards the option of him converting to DHS as it’d be a bit much for the DHS to plant one of their babies into the Storm Dragon Empire’s nobility in anticipation of the country going through a revolt and him rising to more power than he would’ve had under the rule of the previous Emperor and Liu Jianguo. Either that or his entire backstory is somehow fake. This also throws wrenches in the plan to separate him from External Relations and I’m really looking forward to seeing how everything plays out

Mecanimus

Welcome back! And thanks for writing nine to five I’ll have a good time sampling it.

Blahful

Isn't this great! Seems like you enjoy making us wait.

Leon

Well this was a happy surprise

Gamer Doyle

Well that is an interesting mix. The question becomes is Duke Lai following DFS and/or Elder Fa's orders and trying to get an in with both Five Blessings Group and Divine Frozen Palace or going off script.

Robert Garrett

Happy little accidents

Lorne Hill

I was just checking to see if there would be a delay and instead I find an early chapter instead.

Austin

Thanks for the chapter!

Amelgar

oh dear... wasn't expecting that

Mat Haz

Ain't that the truth!
