This chapter was quite fun.

msng

Interesting that he isn't considered a wonderful cultivator yet, as future tense is used instead...

Yshua

> “It seems,” Patriarch Feng says. “My words do matter more than yours.”

Yshua

I just came back and reread this weeks later, for the end. So good. Also, Patreon’s commenting system is so bad.

Gavriel

Because as an emperor he does not need to destroy what is his. He views Xun Huwen as one of his, and that isn't Huwen's choice, unless he surpasses the Patriarch; low odds, and besides it's unlikely Xun Huwen will return an enemy.

Gardor

Is raising strong cultivators the end goal? Making a "valuable cultivator" is one thing, but doesn't it matter who that cultivator benefits? If Xun Huwen is now an enemy, why is the Patriarch happy that he left the kid alive?

Al

I agree, but I could imagine that the Patriarch is duing something like what Xue did, magically prompting Jin to speak his mind.

LenoraeKB

Great chapter. It felt a little OOC for Jin to push so hard in a conversation like this, but I loved the points raised and what it revealed about Jin and powerful cultivators

Iwritestrangethings

Amazing!

Archit Goel

Brilliant work, keep writing good stuff, it will be made in TV series one day.

David Wei

I just realized. Back before the contest started, had one of the Feng brothers just said screw it and stood up to and fought dear old dad for the position, then he'd probably get the position right then and there.

nugitoBambino

and in his rage to correct that state of affairs he treads towards becoming the mightiest and impose his will on the world. It's deliciously hypocritical and also the only way to achieve his goals. Lord, this story is awesome

MasterofNova

It seems like the only way to reach the peak is to want to change the world in your image, the Patriarch probably had a very different image than our mc. Also age inherently makes ya a bit disconnected from the world in certain ways and it would only make sense for that disconnect to grow with age. While Liu Jin isn’t destined to be like the patriarch or Huwen, they have intrinsic similarities that will only be enhanced as the story continues I would say.

MasterofNova

That was an amazing chap, one of the best honestly. Highkey it is insane how right the old patriarch is though, mc is just trying to change the world what he wants it to be everyone else be damned. Quite the master stroke.

OrigamiKnife

Fuck, that was good.

SupaFly

Man, this story just keeps getting better and better. After the chapter where Liu Jin took over the Dead Plains guys monsters, I couldn't help but upgrade my subscription for more. Great job Mat, seriously.

GregTOF

The next arc will probably be Liu Jin meeting the elite of the crimson cloud empire or the storm dragon empire with Feng zhuo or zhou because it was never specified witch is his name and it appeared wrtten in 2 ways ... I like old dog Zhang ... Quite the cultivator himself

Mondred

If I have to take a guess the barrier protecting the continent wont last forever and war with demons will erupt once again. So they need strong fighters for that.

David Wei

I wonder what everyone in the clan is thinking when it suddenly started raining. Especially those who are waiting to give their stones up. Also wonder if we'll get Lui Mei giving over her stone. On one hand, it's her first meeting with her grandpa and she's a very important character. On the other hand, I don't see Lui Mei doing something that's more than just giving the stone unless Grandpa Feng pushes her to. She's def more cautious than Jin.

Blahful

Hmmm, I'm getting some sort of conspiracy vibes. Grandpa Feng just admitted that the goal is to raise strong cultivators, whose worth is more than the fodder. The clan and his sons mean little to him. He doesn't care if Jin doesn't respect him, he's even encouraged this belligerence, because that pushes Jin to be a better cultivator. It's almost like the whole apparatus is just a way to increase strong cultivators by darwinism. I had assumed that the goal was to maintain their family supremacy and remove potential competition by marriage or deliberate accidents. However, there appears to be some stimulus that's offsetting the obvious desire of eliminating future competition. I'm also disappointed in Jin boy for not asking the obvious question - "Why?"

burning_the_paper

This is why I love this story so much - the Patriarch could have been another two-bit, cold and calculating ruler that brooks no disagreement because he is powerful and you are not, yet here we have him take his time to explain his worldview to Liu Jin, and share a lot of wisdom with the protagonist. You not only make these people sound alien and eldritch, as such old and potent creatures ought to be, but also wise and knowledgeable. The question of "might makes right" is at the core of the story, and of the protagonist's motivation, yet time and again he's being shown why such a state of affairs is the natural outcome.

Silverias

Oh, this is great, I really really enjoy how Patriarch now.

Yoav

" because he is your son’s friend" Mat I think you mean your friends grandson, because I doubt that either Shanghai nor gui have ever liked huwen.

Nathan Thompson

Even though I can't add anything to what's already been said, I've really gotta chime in and say that this was an incredible chapter. Fantastic comparison of the thinking between two different people, great tension, great reveal of information while still containing plenty of mystery. This is easily on par with, if not better than, the best cultivation stories I've read on Amazon and wuxiaworld. Rock on. I look forward to next week's chapter.

David Wei

There's probably up to 5 more chapters of fallout before a time skip, but I don't think we're going all the way to the tourney. We have a true realm arc to go through first.

JoBo12

I am so excited to see how the power dynamics in the Eternal Flame sect shift after this. Liu Jin's achievements and being approved by the old patriarch, Lu Mei' heritage now being known, Gui as patriarch, there is still the open Medical Pavilion etc.. Will there be a small timeskip soon after this till either the crimson cloud tournament or the storm dragon empire? As most plot threads in the Eternal Flame Clan are being resolved this seems like the right time for a transition to the next big arc.

João Vieira

I don't usually comment on chapters on Patreon, but I just want to applaud you because this whole conversation is great. The tension, the characters involved, their rationales. On. Point.

Guy

Side Note: If Xun Huwen were to die on the other side of the dead plains, would that feel fake/forced or would it make the world seem more alive? I guess it would depend on how you pull it off.

Guy

Yeah the more we learn about the brothers the more obvious it becomes to me that Feng Shang was probably the better immediate choice, but Feng Gui will probably grow into the role. And I'm really appreciating this world-building. A part of me wishes Liu Jin luck, but a part of me also recognizes that there is a very real sense in which Jin isn't the only 'protagonist' and that's what makes this story so great. So Jin just succeeding would be spitting in the face of that. So I hope Jin struggles and grows and adapts without losing who he is, but in the more immediate sense I'm looking forward to seeing Jin's Dao.

David Giles

Well I was wrong about the old man being senile, Machiavellian to a fault but not senile.

nknesflkesfe

I wonder if Jin will look at the medical division and realise he too has been shaping it to his image.

discerningLikes

damn, this was a good chapter. I really enjoyed seeing Liu Jin rage against the heavens.

almostNEET

Gui.

almostNEET

Wow. Just wow. Why do most people near the peak become like this or is being like this the easiest way to reach the peak? Can only hope Liu Jin is able to hold onto his own values by the time he's stepping onto the peak realms.

Hunter8k

The tension in this chapter 10/10

Gamer Doyle

Patriarch Feng to Gao, "Ho you have quite a good disciple among your followers." Feng Gao thinking to himself, "GREAT, wait which disciple?"
