Also should: “Though most remains in good condition, forming a nearly perfect square around the temple, a few segments have broken down and collapsed over the ages.” be: “Though most remain in good condition, forming a nearly perfect square around the temple, a few segments have broken down and collapsed over the ages.”

Also thinking it might possibly be because the plot hasn't advanced much in this chapter.

Mecanimus

It is Always difficult to remove agency from the main character. The unfortunate Liu Jin could not achieve anything here, and it can be frustrating. Perhaps it was that. Perhaps not. This reader would not presume to know.

Robert Davidson

I think the problem is that it feels like a purely connective chapter. It moves the plot from a to b, but doesn't do much else.

David Wei

I've been thinking about this chapter, and I think one problem is in repeated information. Take the following section: "The assembled disciples trade looks with each other. Finally, it is the bald disciple who speaks up. “Junior,” he says, running a hand over his bald head. There is a slightly exasperated look on his face. “Do you really think it is up to us to win this?” “What?” “I do not mean to imply we are weak,” the bald disciple asserts, putting a fist over his chest. “If we were in other Sects, we might be Core Disciples already or even Elders, but in the Eternal Flame Clan, we’re still just Inner Disciples. Even Sister Fan and Brother Qing would be courting death if they were to try to compete against a Core Disciple. Again, I mean no offense when I say this!” “No offense taken. You speak with sense,” Liu Jin says. Fan Bingbing nods as well. The bald disciple looks more than a little relieved by that. “The Core Disciples were always going to finish this contest before us,” the bald disciple continues. “They are faster than us. Those in the Heaven Realm can fly! There was never a moment where we could have defeated them in a contest of speed!” In the aftermath of those words, the plains feel a little more empty and silent. Nothing the bald disciple said was untrue. They have all been aware of it from the beginning. When they were chosen for this mission. When they were trying to escape the giant worm. When they were in front of the duke. They knew they were never going to be the ones who secured victory for their side." The thing is, you basically already said this information last chapter, with Feng Zhi and Hao talking to each other. Furthermore, because the bald guy immediately dies, it's not like the conversation reveals anything important about a side-character that will continue interacting with the plot. It makes the entire section feel like filler.

I don't like where u are taking this story. Sect members openly killing each other ? Even in the most bloodthirsty of Xianxia novels, this is almost never done. All sense of "love" I had for the Fire sect is gone. You seem to like doing Build -->Destroy...which works once or twice, but overall, I now just don't case about the sect. My emotional investment in it has become 0. Which is not a major issue if Liu Jin continues to be a great character (I love him), but it reduces my love for the world u have built.

Blahful

I've been feeling this for a few chapters starting when the Shang-mooks Jin saved all died. Notice the progression of the story a few chapters before that one. I mean the pacing was amazing starting Elder Xun chapter culminating to Xun Huwen challenge and the introduction is Papa Fang. Then we enter the dead plains and it's just been mooks dying in funny ways. The short interludes with Mei, Hao, Bei were more satisfying than the main story.

Solarnis

I feel there's no sense of progression or maybe substance in this chapter. There's no character development for Liu Jin or Fan Bingbing; their situation does change but we don't find out how that affects things until next week. I think it'd flow better if the disciples reaching the temple is summarised and the archer attack happens closer to the beginning of the chapter. Then you could set the stage for the next interesting encounter/s in the temple to be revealed in the next chapter or give us a sneak peek now.

And thus the deadly intra-sect politics keep reaping yet more disciples.

It says a lot about how out of it I am right now that I didn't immediately get it even when you pointed it out.

lenkite

A short chapter in which some nameless mooks died to an archer. Could have just summarised it in a single sentence.

Fastus

I'll tell you why. It's because of this: ' "Why are you all so calm?" The assembled disciples trade looks with each other. Finally, it is the bald disciple who speaks up. "Junior," he says, running a hand through his hair. There is a slightly exasperated look on his face. "Do you really think it is up to us to win this?" "What?" ' I don' t think it was on purpose. lol

Ali

Welcome to the Dead Plains, where the bad can only get worse!

Lightseid

It's because the chapter is too short. That's what is bothering you, you secretely think deep inside you that the chapters should be longer. So that our hunger might be sated. Anyway, great chapter as usual.
